OnceHub is a cloud service that allows users to backup files from an online database. OnceHub has been created by a group of programmers located in Los Angeles, California and was released on June 11, 2013. OnceHub uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3. as the storage medium. OnceHub claims that they can provide up to 25MB free storage space and it is estimated that they will reach one billion files stored by the end of 2013. OnceHub also offers a web application programming interface (API. for third party developers to build their own applications using the OnceHub service as well as integrations with other services such as Dropbox and Google Drive.
Amazon S3 is a file hosting service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS. It was launched in March 2006 and is designed to be scalable and reliable. The storage capacity of an individual user's account is determined by the number of objects stored within the account. Generally, the more objects stored, the higher the cost will be. For example, users can store up to 5GB of data at the cost of $0.15 per month, but this will increase to $1.50 per month if they store 100GB of data. Amazon S3 is used to host applications such as OnceHub, but it can also be used to store images, documents and other forms of media.
OnceHub allows users to easily backup their files onto Amazon S3 by dragging and dropping them into the OnceHub interface. OnceHub has created a set of APIs so that users can access their files directly from their own applications or websites. These APIs are open source meaning that any developer who wishes to use the OnceHub service can freely do so. A user can create an account on OnceHub by registering with his/her email address and creating a password. OnceHub then verifies their email address before allowing access to their account. OnceHub supports both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems. OnceHub does not currently support mobile devices, but they claim that support for these devices will be added in the future. Currently, there are no plans to allow unlimited unlimited storage space on OnceHub. This means that once a user has reached the maximum amount of storage space available to them, they will have to purchase more space if they wish to continue using OnceHub.
OnceHub claims that it has many advantages over similar services such as Dropbox. Some of these advantages include:
OnceHub allows users to upload files without having to pay for additional storage space. This means that users only pay for what they use rather than paying for an amount of space regardless of how much data they actually store. OnceHub stores all files locally on the user's computer meaning that no matter how large the file is or how often it is accessed, it will never count toward the amount of storage space used on the user's account. If a user loses his/her computer or it crashes, he/she can still access his/her files through the OnceHub service. This is because all files are hosted on Amazon S3 servers rather than on the user's computer. OnceHub does not currently support mobile devices; however, they claim that support for mobile devices will be added in the future. This means that mobile device users will not need to install any software to access their files. Instead, they will be able to access them through their mobile device browsers (Chrome, Safari etc..
To conclude, I believe that it would be an excellent idea for me to use both Dropbox and OnceHub in my final year project as they both offer ways to host applications externally with ease. However, I feel that Oncehub will be more suitable for my project as it is open source, allows unlimited storage space and allows users access to their files regardless of where their files are stored. In addition to these features, Oncehub has an API which allows developers to write their own software programs which use Oncehub as a back end storage engine.
