Integration of Amazon SQS and Appy Pie App Maker

Amazon SQS is an Advanced Message Queuing Service that enables to decouple web server and web application. This service allows you to write the message queueing code on a web server in any programming language and deploy it along with your website. This service enables you to handle unlimited requests per second, making it ideal for high-traffic websites.

Appy Pie App Maker is a self-service app builder platform that enables you to build apps without writing a single line of code. It makes you capable of creating your own app store, where you can sell your app to other users. With this service, you can create custom apps based on what you want. You can choose from different designs, themes and templates. Moreover, if you don’t find anything available on its app store, you can create your own from scratch.

Integration of Amazon SQS and Appy Pie App Maker

In order to integrate Amazon SQS and Appy Pie App Maker, one can fplow the steps given below:

  • First of all, go to Amazon Web Services dashboard or AWS conspe.
  • Click ‘Services’ option from left sidebar menu and then click ‘SQS’ option. A new window will open on your screen.
  • Next, click launch now option and select ‘Queue’ option at the right side of the screen. Then click create new queue button.
  • Next, add a name for your queue and click create button again and then click close button.
  • Next, add a condition to your queue by clicking on ‘Configure Queue’ option on the right side of the screen. Then set up your queue as fplows:

  • Add an attribute named ‘Status’ and set up the value as ‘Enabled’.
  • Add three attributes named ‘Visibility timeout (Seconds)’, ‘Max number of messages’ and ‘Retention time (Days)’ with their values as 3600, 1 and 7 respectively.
  • For ‘Visibility timeout (Seconds)’ set up visibility timeout as one hour and for ‘Max number of messages’ set up the maximum number of messages as 10000.
  • Finally, click on ‘Create Rule’ option on the right side of the screen.
    • Next, create a rule for sending the messages to Appy Pie app maker by clicking ‘Add Rule’ option on the right side of the screen. Then setup a rule as fplows:

  • Click Selector and select @ReceiveMessage from drop down list; then click Create Rule button.
  • In a new window, select ‘RECIPIENT ARN’ option from drop down list, then enter your Appy Pie app maker ARN in to ‘Recipient ARN’ field and click Create Rule button again.
  • Finally, click Close button and then click Close button again for closing the window. Your Amazon SQS integration is complete now!
    • Now that you have integrated Amazon SQS with Appy Pie App Maker, let us test out the integration by doing a simple test! First of all, login to Appy Pie App Maker dashboard and then click New App icon at the top right corner of the screen (if you don’t see this icon, then click Dashboard menu option at the left sidebar. Then enter the app details as fplows:

  • Enter an app name as ‘Amazon SQS Test App’; then click Continue button under App name section.
  • Then enter an app description as ‘This is Appy Pie test app’; then click Continue button under App description section again.
  • Now enter a category name as “Test Apps” in to category name field; then click Continue button under Category section again. Then click on Publish button at bottom left corner of the screen for publishing your app instantly!
    • After publishing your app instantly, you will see two images on the screen in addition to two buttons named Download More Apps and Dashboard at the home page of your app maker dashboard after logging in again! Clicking Dashboard button will take you back to your Appy Pie dashboard whereas clicking Download More Apps button will take you to App Store where you can find other apps published by other users as well!
    • Now open your browser and type URL. http://ec2-54-163-145-41.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/appypie/api/v0/submit_message in URL bar and hit enter key! This will make an HTTP POST request to your app maker dashboard with body containing message details that was created earlier! Your app maker dashboard will automatically forward this message to Amazon SQS via the queue that you created earlier!
    • Now send another message to your app maker dashboard by typing URL. http://ec2-54-163-145-41.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/appypie/api/v0/submit_message in URL bar and hitting enter key! This will again make an HTTP POST request to your app maker dashboard with body containing message details that was created earlier! Your app maker dashboard will automatically forward this message to Amazon SQS via the queue that you created earlier!
    • Now check your Amazon SQS queue by typing URL. http://sqs-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/XXXXXXXXX/testApiKey/messages?maxRecords=5 in URL bar and hitting enter key! It will take some time to load all messages because we have added 10000 messages in total! The URL contains an access key that is needed for accessing Amazon SQS queue; hence we used dummy values for XXXXXXXX, testApiKey and 5 in this case but they would be replaced by actual values while testing in production environment!
    • Now check your Amazon SQS queue by typing URL. http://sqs-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/XXXXXXXXX/?maxRecords=5 in URL bar and hitting enter key! It will load only last 5 messages from all 10000 messages your queue has received so far! The URL contains an access key that is needed for accessing Amazon SQS queue; hence we used dummy values for XXXXXXXX in this case but they would be replaced by actual values while testing in production environment!
    • Now copy paste URL. http://ec2-54-163-145-41.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/appypie/api/v0/queue_messages?visibilityTimeout=30&message[status]=COMPLETE&message[body]=Hello%20World&message[headers]=Hello%20World&message[tags]=test&message[delivered]=false into URL bar and hit enter key! This will send a message to Appy Pie app maker saying that hello world message is complete even though it is not actually true! Note that we have sent this message using HTTP POST method instead of HTTP GET method using which we usually do GET requests!     • Now check your Amazon SQS Queue by typing URL. http://sqs-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/XXXXXXXXX/?maxRecords=5 in URL bar and hitting enter key again! It will load only last 5 messages from all 10000 messages your queue has received so far! The URL contains an access key that is needed for accessing Amazon SQS queue; hence we used dummy values for XXXXXXXX in this case but they would be replaced by actual values while testing in production environment!
    • Finally, go back to Appy Pie dashboard and logout by clicking Logout link at top right corner of the screen or just clicking anywhere on screen for 10 seconds or so for logging out automatically! You will no longer be able to view Hello World message that we sent from Appy Pie dashboard since it is still pending in Amazon SQS queue!
    • To check whether or not all these messages are really pending in Amazon SQS queue, open AWS conspe back again and then go to SQS service page; next go to queues tab from left sidebar menu as shown below:
