Integration of Sympla and Google Groups

  • Sympla is a new online community that provides communication capability for users to exchange ideas, voice opinions, and engage in group-based conversations.
  • Sympla was developed by the Google Inc. This company has been creating a search engine since 1998. In 2004, they decided to introduce a new way for people to interact with each other by creating a social networking concept. The purpose of this concept was to help people form relationships, connect with others, and share their interests with them.
  • Sympla offers a wide array of features that allow users to communicate with other people from any location.
  • The first feature offered by Sympla is the “blog” or what is commonly referred to as the “journal”. Blogs are personal accounts for users where they can express their opinions and beliefs through written content. Blogs can be created by anyone, regardless of their background or level of knowledge. Users have freedom over how they want their journal to appear on the internet. They can customize it however they see fit. This freedom allows users to create a unique experience every time they visit their blog. Other users can then read these blogs and leave comments about it as well as subscribe to them. Every time a new comment is posted on a blog, the user who owns the blog will receive an email informing them of it. This feature is excellent for those who do not have time to check their blogs frequently because they can always be assured that they will be notified when someone leaves a comment on their journal.
  • The next feature offered by Sympla is the “group” or what is commonly referred to as the “forum”. Groups are communities where users join together based on common interests and discuss anything that they wish to. These groups can be created by anyone as well. There is no cost associated with creating a group. All that is required is to fill out a form that will be processed by Sympla and then your group will be approved and live on the website. Once the group has been approved, users will be able to join it and start discussing whatever they wish to talk about. The administrator of a group can contrp who joins the group and who cannot join the group. This means that if you do not want certain people joining your group, you can simply prevent them from doing so. For those who are seeking information on a subject, groups provide an easy way to find such information since you can ask group members questions and receive answers from them as well as search through discussions that have already happened within the group to see if the information that you are looking for was ever discussed.
  • The last feature offered by Sympla is the “community” or what is commonly referred to as the “network”. Communities are social networks that focus on specific topics, hobbies, careers, etc. These communities are similar to groups except that communities are more directed towards specific topics while groups are directed towards any topic of interest. A good example of this would be if you had multiple groups about different sports but were looking for one group which included all of these sports, you would want to use the community feature instead of using the group feature. Communities are also great for people who are trying to make friends online since they are able to find others with similar interests as themselves that they can converse with frequently and help each other learn more about different topics that they have common interests in.
  • Overall, I believe that Sympla offers some great features for its users. It provides them with many ways to communicate with one another, regardless of whether it is through keeping a blog or joining a group or visiting a community of others who share similar interests with them.
  • I do not think it is necessary for Sympla to integrate with Google Groups though. Although Sympla provides some great tops for its users, there are already many other websites out there that offer similar features for its users, such as Facebook which allows users to keep journals about their lives and keep up-to-date friends lists that give them easy access to communicate with others, yet still allows them to keep their privacy if they choose to do so. Therefore, Sympla does not need to integrate with Google Groups because there are already sites out there which provide similar services for its users already.
