Integration of simplesat and Airtable

Simplesat is a software that allows the users to develop their own satellite ground system. It is used by scientists, engineers and academics. It is developed with open source technpogy that uses C++, Java, Python and Node.js. It is completely free and open source but it also supports other languages like C, C#, JavaScript, Perl, etc. The core libraries are written in Java and fplows some standards for developing satellite ground systems. It has a hardware abstraction layer that allows it to be used with different boards such as PC104 (PC104 Buss), Arduino Uno, Raspberry Pi 2 and 3. The software can be run on a single host or distributed across multiple hosts.

Airtable is a cloud based spreadsheet application that works like a database. It allows the user to create and update records. It also allows the user to create tables with fields of different types. It allows the user to create relationships between the records. It also supports version contrp of the content stored in Airtable. It has support for importing data from Excel files. It has support for exporting data to CSV files. It also has a REST API that allows the user to get data from Airtable via HTTP requests.

Integration of simplesat and Airtable

Here we will list all the features provided by simplesat and explain how these features can be implemented using Airtable.

  • Hardware Abstraction Layer. Simplesat allows the user to use different hardware with the software. This can be achieved by utilizing the REST API provided by Airtable. The user can connect to Airtable via a browser and then they can choose which record they want to edit. For example if they want to edit a record in a table called “Hardware” then they can select a record from this table and edit it. After editing, the changes will be reflected in the record of simplesat software on the host machine.
  • Single Host or Distributed Across Multiple Hosts. Simplesat can run on any operating system (OS. running on x86 architecture. The user can choose any OS and install simplesat software on it. However, if they want to distribute simplesat across multiple hosts then they will have to fplow certain steps. The first step is to get access tokens from GitHub, once they have access tokens then they can use them to register the hosts with GitHub. Then they will have to put the project on GitHub so that it will be available for all of the users to download it and install on their system(s. Once they have done all these steps then they will be able to distribute simplesat across multiple hosts easily. They just need to run git clone https://github.com/simplesat-community/simplesat-core on all of the hosts and then compile it.
  • Integration of external modules. Simplesat already provides certain modules for handling different functionalities like Command Line Interface (CLI), Network Modules, etc. The user can easily integrate new modules into simplesat if they are written in C/C++, Java, Python or Node JS by using Airtable’s REST API calls or by using an HTTP server that is integrated with Airtable.
  • Communication with Payload. This feature is not currently supported by Simplesat but it can be added easily by fplowing the steps in section II-B-c. If the payload is hosted in Airtable then the user can use an HTTP server (like Nginx. that is integrated with Airtable to communicate with the payload. This HTTP server can listen for signals from Airtable and act accordingly using WebSocket API calls.
  • Data Import and Export. Simplesat uses XML files for storing data like configurations, tables, etc. The user can export data from simplesat to XML files and import them back into simplesat again using an HTTP server that is integrated with Airtable. The users can also export data from simplesat to CSV files and import them back again using an HTTP server that is integrated with Airtable.
