Quick answer

What Kind of Payment App Can You Build Without Code?

“Payment app” means two different things, and only one of them is something an app builder can make for you.

An app that takes payments for your business

Orders, bookings, memberships, donations and counter payments, paid by card through Stripe, PayPal or another gateway into your own account. This is what Appy Pie builds.

A wallet or P2P app like Venmo

An app that holds balances and sends money between people is a regulated financial product. It needs licences and a banking partner. See what that involves.

Six steps

How to Create a Payment App in 6 Steps

From an idea to the first paid order, without writing code.

01

Describe your app

Type what you sell and how people pay into the box above. AI drafts the app’s pages and features.

02

Add a payment feature

Store for products, E-wallet, in-app purchase for digital content, a donate page or paid sign-in.

03

Connect your gateway

Paste the keys from your Stripe, PayPal or other gateway account. Payouts go straight to that account.

04

Set prices and delivery

Add products and prices, taxes, pickup or delivery rules, and the card reader if you take payments in person.

05

Test a real order

Install the test app, pay a small amount with your own card, then refund it from the gateway dashboard.

06

Publish

Gold puts the app on Google Play; Platinum adds the App Store. Both stores review the app first.

Payment features

Ways to Take Payments in Your App

Each one is a feature you add in the editor. Store, E-wallet and in-app purchase are premium features, so they need the Gold or Platinum plan.

Store checkout

Sell products with a cart and checkout. Customers pick a payment method and get a thank-you page when the payment goes through.

  • Product categories, search, ratings and reviews
  • Cart with discounts and the final amount
  • Order history, saved addresses and a wishlist
  • Return and cancellation requests from the app
  • Shipping and billing address at checkout
  • Every order with its date, items and status in your dashboard
Premium · Gold or Platinum

E-wallet

Let customers pay inside your app without leaving it. Ask support which top-up and refund options your country supports.

Premium · Gold or Platinum

In-app purchases

Weekly, monthly or yearly subscriptions and one-time products, sold through Google Play and the App Store.

Premium · Gold or Platinum

Card reader at the counter

Pair a Stripe Terminal card reader with a phone to take card payments for pickup, in-store and delivery orders.

Store and Food Court

Donate page

A page where supporters give to your church, club or cause from the app.

Donate feature

Paid sign-in

Charge for access when people sign in, for members-only content and classes.

Login page payment

Cash on delivery

Let customers pay when a pickup or delivery order arrives, in cash or by card on the reader.

Store and Food Court

Selling products? The ecommerce app builder covers store apps in detail. Taking food orders? See the restaurant app maker.

Gateways

Payment Gateways You Can Connect

The help centre has a set-up guide for each of these. The money goes to your own account with the provider.

Need a local payment method that is not here? Ask support before you build: reviewers on G2 mention local methods they could not add. Marketplace apps use Stripe Connect to pay out vendors and drivers, as in the delivery app builder and taxi app builder.

P2P and wallets

Can You Build a P2P or Money Transfer App?

Not with an app builder, and every guide on this topic says why. Here is the short version.

Moving other people’s money needs a licence

In the US, an app that holds balances or sends money between people generally has to register with FinCEN as a money services business and hold state money transmitter licences. In the EU and UK it needs an e-money or payment institution licence. Itexus’s payment app guide sets out the same requirements. This is general information, not legal advice.

Pay out sellers with Stripe Connect

For a marketplace, Stripe collects the payment, checks each seller and pays them out, so you never hold the money yourself.

Fits: marketplaces, delivery, rides

Build on a licensed partner

A licensed bank or e-money company holds the funds and runs identity checks, and your developers build on its API.

Fits: wallets and cards with a dev team

Hire a fintech agency

A team that builds the app, arranges audits and works with your lawyers on licensing. Budgets are in the next section.

Fits: a funded fintech product

Development cost

Payment App Development Cost: Builder vs Agency

What each route costs before your app takes its first payment. Bars are drawn on a $0 to $500,000 scale.

Appy Pie, first year$457 to $844
Agency, basic version (Itexus)around $80,000
Agency, average mobile payment app (ScienceSoft)$150,000 to $250,000
Agency, enterprise version (Itexus)up to $500,000

ScienceSoft puts a web payment app with its own processing engine at $1,500,000 to $2,000,000+. Sources: ScienceSoft and Itexus payment app guides, read on October 9, 2026. The agency figures include things a builder does not do, such as licensing and your own payment processing.

Payment App Builder FAQ

What people ask before they build an app that takes payments, including the questions Google shows on these searches.

Yes, if the app takes payments for your business: orders, bookings, memberships, donations or in-person card payments. Appy Pie builds that without code. A wallet or peer-to-peer app that holds and moves other people’s money is different: it needs financial licences and a banking partner, which no app builder provides.

You can build and preview the app on a 7-day free trial. Taking payments uses premium features such as Store, E-wallet and in-app purchases, so a live payment app needs the Gold plan at $36 a month for Google Play or Platinum at $60 a month to add the iPhone. Google charges $25 once, Apple $99 a year, and your payment provider takes a fee on each payment.

With Appy Pie the first year is about $457 for an Android app on Gold, or about $844 for Android and iPhone on Platinum, including store fees. Agencies quote far more for a custom build: Itexus puts a basic version at around $80,000, and ScienceSoft puts a mobile payment app of average complexity at $150,000 to $250,000.

Add a payment feature such as Store, E-wallet or in-app purchase, paste the keys from your Stripe, PayPal or other gateway account into the feature settings, set your prices, then place a small real order and refund it before you publish. Our help centre has a step-by-step article for each supported gateway.

Not to build one. Apple lets individuals enrol as developers, while an organisation account needs a legal entity and a D-U-N-S number, and Stripe accepts individuals and sole proprietors in many countries. A wallet or money transfer app is different: it needs a company and financial licences. This is general information, not legal advice.

No. Apps that hold balances and send money between people are regulated: in the US they generally register with FinCEN and hold state money transmitter licences, and in the EU and UK they need an e-money or payment institution licence. You can build an app that takes payments for your own business, or work with a licensed partner or a fintech agency for a wallet.

Our help centre has set-up guides for Stripe, PayPal Payments Pro, Authorize.net, Razorpay, Mercado Pago and iPay88, and Stripe Connect is used to pay out vendors and drivers in Food Court and On-Demand Delivery. If you need a local payment method that is not listed, ask support before you build.

Yes, with the Store and Food Court features. The point-of-sale option pairs a Stripe Terminal card reader with a phone, so a payment collector can take card payments for pickup and in-store orders and a driver can collect on delivery.

Yes, through in-app purchases set up in Google Play and App Store Connect, with weekly, monthly, yearly or one-time products. Apple and Google require their own in-app purchase for digital content used in the app, while physical goods and real-world services are paid through your own gateway.

Yes, on the Platinum plan at $60 a month with an Apple Developer account at $99 a year. Apple reviews the app before it goes live, and Apple says it reviews 90% of submissions in under 48 hours.

Payments run through the gateway you connect, such as Stripe or PayPal, and you hold the account with that provider, so check its security terms. For Appy Pie’s own security and compliance certificates, see our certifications page.

You refund a payment from your gateway account, such as your Stripe dashboard. In the Store feature, customers can send return and cancellation requests from the app, and you see every order with its status in your dashboard.
