The media landscape has changed dramatically in the past decade. It is proving that video is a powerful top for education, information, and entertainment. When you think of video, YouTube immediately comes to mind. YouTube has revputionized the way we process information and has created an entirely new culture of its own. Today, YouTube is used by millions to learn, think, and share information. YouTube is also a powerful top for businesses looking to promote their products and services.
Google has recently launched a new product called Filter By Connect, which allows people to filter the videos they watch based on their friends' recommendations. Filter By Connect is a perfect example of how Google is using social networking sites to build a new breed of search engine that is more personalized than ever before. Although it may seem like just another Facebook app, it represents a significant step forward in Google's plans for social search.
YouTube is a video-sharing website that enables users to upload, view, rate, share, and comment about videos. YouTube's stated mission is "to give everyone a voice and show them the world." The website was created by three former PayPal employees—Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—in February 2005. Google bought the site in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion; YouTube now operates as one of Google's subsidiaries. YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate and share videos, and creates an opportunity for content creators to earn money from their content through advertising, subscription or paid downloads. It offers free digital cameras to those who upload videos, and shares revenue earned from advertising with the video uploaders. It uses Adobe Flash Video technpogy to display user-generated video content on web pages or mobile devices. A YouTube video can be embedded into any web page; when viewed, it plays within a frame on the page. Users can post comments on videos they've watched. These comments can be seen by other users who are watching the same video or by anyone who visits the video page.
Filter by Connect is an application released by Google that allows users to find videos that are connected to those they have watched in other ways (such as shared on a friend's profile or uploaded by someone they know. The application also allows users to recommend videos to their friends and see what videos their friends are watching. The application pulls data from the user's social channels such as Facebook and Flickr, their Google contacts, and any other websites they have previously visited where they may have logged in with their Google account. Through this information it can suggest other videos that the user might like, because the computer will know what type of videos they enjoyed in the past. This application was released on June 16th 2010 at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RKqlrZnN3U&feature=player_embedded)
