Integration of Xzazu and Asana

  • Introduction:
  • Xzazu and Asana are two of the most important disciplines that have been practiced for centuries. However, they have never been integrated as a single system. This lack of integration is a serious problem because it is thought to be one of the reasons why such a large segment of the population is not practicing either discipline properly. This paper will first give an overview of what Xzazu and Asana are and how they are practiced. Then, it will give reasons for integrating these practices and finally conclude with some ideas about how to proceed.

    :

Xzazu and Asana are part of an ancient Indian system of meditation called Raja Yoga. In the last twenty-five years or so, they have been popularized through the work of a number of teachers, including B. K. S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Sri Dharma Mittra. They are also included in Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes as well as in Yoga classes. Both are done on the floor, with the practitioner lying on his back. The body is positioned according to the specific discipline being practiced, and the breaths are synchronized with the movements. Both place particular emphasis on bringing awareness to the muscles and tissues as they are used during the practices.

Xzazu (pronounced shah-AZ-ZOO. is a series of postures designed to align the spine and open up the chest and lungs. It is said to bring about balance between the heart and mind. Xzazu is practiced by doing complex postures that invpve moving from one posture to another in quick succession, creating a movement which resembles swimming. The postures help strengthen, stretch, and align the spine and muscles in the body.

The poses are sometimes referred to as “the twelve animals” because they are named after animals found in nature – Cobra, Eagle, Camel, Rabbit, Baby Elephant, Cat, Dog, Frog, Cow, Horse, Fish, and Kangaroo. A pose is done in three stages. inhalation in the beginning stage; exhalation at midpoint; and breath retention in the final stage. Three rounds of eleven poses each make up one cycle of the practice. The breathing is done in conjunction with the movement, with exhalations being done during forward bends and inhalations during backbends.

Asana (pronounced ah-SHAHN-AH. is a series of postures designed to stretch and strengthen various muscle groups throughout the body. The postures can be performed individually or in combination with other poses. They also help to balance the energy in the body through stimulation of prana (vital life force energy. While there are different ways of organizing poses in sets, one basic set consists of fifteen poses. This basic set begins with standing forward bends, fplowed by standing twists, leg stretches, seated positions, supine postures (done on the belly), inverted postures (done against gravity), spinal twists, and backbends. The flow of the set alternates between forward bending and backward bending poses.

There are many benefits to integrating Xzazu and Asana into one complete system rather than keeping them as separate disciplines. One benefit is that by integrating them into one system it becomes easier for students to learn both disciplines quickly because they will know what they are learning. Another benefit is that by integrating them into one system students who learn only one discipline will learn more easily because they will have some familiarity with techniques from both disciplines. Finally, integrating Xzazu and Asana into one system will allow students to get more out of both disciplines because students can learn how to combine them in order to get maximum results from each one.
