WordPress is a free content management system that lets you easily create your own blog or website. It’s the most popular CMS (content management system. in the world, with over 60 million websites of all shapes and sizes using it.
On the other hand, Tableau is a software used to visualize data. It is best known as a business intelligence top but can also be used for other visualizations such as maps, stock charts and so on.
In this section, I am going to discuss how WordPress can be integrated with Tableau.
WordPress is used for creating blogs and websites. It has great potential to be used as a platform for data visualization and analytical insight. The integration of WordPress and Tableau helps us to visualize data in both ways. That is, we can publish the information in a way that humans can easily read and understand. On the other hand, we can also publish information in a way that machines or computers can use the information for analysis. This is done by connecting WordPress and Tableau online through application programming interface (API. In order to connect these two platforms, we need to get an access key for each of them.
To get an access key for WordPress, go to the end of your blog URL and click on ‘developers’. Then, fill the form with your details and click on ‘create a new key’ button. After filling the form, you will get an access key that allows you to post things into your blog from anywhere in the world. Similarly, to get an access key for Tableau, go to ‘Tableau Developer’ website and click on ‘sign up here’ button. After filling the form with your details, you will get an access key that allows you to integrate WordPress and Tableau together.
After getting the access keys from both the platforms, we need to integrate them together. To do this, we need to install an extension in our web browser called ‘Tableau Bridge’. We need to install this extension in our computer so that it can communicate with our WordPress website. Once you have installed it, you will be able to see a green icon at the right bottom corner of your web browser, indicating that it has been installed successfully. Now that we have connected our WordPress website with Tableau Bridge, we are ready to embed Tableau visualizations inside our WordPress website. For example, suppose I have created a dashboard in Tableau with some information about my company and want to show it on my WordPress website. I will first create a WordPress page of my company and then embed the dashboard in that page using the ‘Embed option’ present at the right side of dashboard menu bar in Tableau.
There are three ways in which WordPress can be integrated with Tableau:
The fplowing table explains these three methods:
Method Description Example 1 Embedding Tableau Visualizations inside WordPress Pages You can embed visualizations from Tableau server or Tableau Online inside your WordPress pages. This is done by clicking on ‘Embed’ option present at the top of dashboard menu bar in Tableau Desktop. Here, you can select either HTML or PDF as output format of your visualizations. You can also choose whether you want your dashboard to be viewed full screen or not. 2 Embedding Data from external Web Sources inside WordPress Pages You can embed data from external web sources inside your WordPress pages using Dashboard Connector available in Tableau Online. For example, suppose you want to embed data from Google analytics inside your WordPress pages. You just need to go to Google analytics website and copy paste your tracking code into 'Tracking Code' box available at the bottom left corner of your analytics dashboard. Similarly, you can also embed data from Yahoo finance and many other websites including Twitter, Facebook etc. 3 Publishing WordPress Pages as Tables in Tableau Server You can publish all your WordPress pages as tables in Tableau server and then view them together using dashboards. This process is carried out using ‘Publish as Tabular’ option present at top-right corner of every WordPress page using Wordpress API module for Tableau server. To publish all your WordPress pages as tables in Tableau server fplow these steps. Step 1. Go to 'Dashboard' menu in Tableau desktop and select Publish as tabular option. Step 2. Select type of data source you want to publish as tables. Step 3. Choose number of rows and cpumns you want your data table to have (this is optional. Step 4. Select name of published table and complete process by clicking on button 'Publish'. After publishing you will find tables on Dashboard menu in Server Explorer under 'All servers'. This table will be stored on server until you delete it manually or when server is shutdown.
