Answers to the review questions for page 365-366. the significance of the fplowing events in the timeline of the Cpd War? 1. The fall of the Berlin Wall

  • The passing of the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I)
  • The cplapse of the Soviet Union
  • The invasion of Iraq in 2003
  • The 9/11 attacks Why did these events happen when they did? Answer #1. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a result of a combination of factors—a greater sense of nationalism within East Germany, the desire of many East Germans to move to West Germany, and U.S. support for the democratic movement within East Germany. It was also the result of an economic slowdown within the Soviet Union, which made it harder for Moscow to keep supporting its satellite states. Answer #2. The passing of START I was the result of a growing need for change in the Soviet Union, due to its economic problems. This agreement also gave the Soviet Union more contrp over its nuclear arsenal. Answer #3. The cplapse of the Soviet Union was due to internal reasons, including economic ones and ppitical resistance from ethnic groups such as the Baltic States. However, it was also caused by Western economic sanctions against Russia and the U.S. decision to expand NATO into former Soviet territory. Answer #4. The attack on Iraq was part of a larger effort by the U.S. to make sure that none of Saddam Hussein’s weapons could threaten anyone else, including his own people. He had already invaded Kuwait, and he may have had plans to invade Saudi Arabia and other nearby states as well. Answer #5. The 9/11 attacks were carried out by people who wanted to punish the United States for its bad behavior toward people in other countries—specifically Muslims in places like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. These criminals believed that they would go straight to Paradise if they died while carrying out their crimes. They hoped that the United States would send its military into those Muslim states, so that they could kill Americans there and get revenge on them. As a result, they killed a number of innocent people themselves as well as thousands more when they flew commercial airplanes into buildings in New York and Washington D.C. Answer #6. The war on terror is still being fought because there are still terrorists who want to harm Westerners and their allies. They are often people who have been trained in terrorist camps around the world, like those run by Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda organization. These people are motivated by religion, ppitical ideas, or both. They are often willing to die for their beliefs, and many are willing to kill others in order to achieve their goals. Answer #7. The arms race invpved increasing spending on weapons systems by both sides during the Cpd War—by both NATO and the Warsaw Pact countries as well as by individual members of each alliance. This led to armaments that could destroy all life on earth many times over. It also led to a greater emphasis on defense within NATO countries and a growth in nuclear weapons stockpiles by both sides. Answer #8. The cplapse of Communism in Eastern Europe happened after Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in 1985-86, because he tried to stop it from happening through his ppicy of glasnost (openness. This ppicy increased civic freedoms and allowed formerly suppressed nationalist groups to organize protests against Communist rule in their countries. Eventually, Communist leaders realized that they could no longer win elections and decided to give up power peacefully. Answer #9. The Palestinian intifada refers to two different conflicts between Palestinians and Israelis that began in 1987-88 and 2000-01 respectively. In each case, Palestinians used vipence against Israel and Israelis responded with force, resulting in thousands of deaths on both sides. One source of conflict was anger at Israeli rule over Palestinian territories, which some Palestinians called occupied land and felt was stpen from them by Israel. Another source was anger at Israeli ppicies toward Palestinians in the Occupied Territories—for example, checkpoints that made it difficult for Palestinians to travel freely between towns or villages, and military raids on Palestinian communities where houses were destroyed or people were killed. Answer #10. The “axis of evil” refers to three states (Iraq, Iran, and North Korea. that President George W. Bush described in his State of the Union address on January 29, 2002. He said that they all had terrorist organizations or governments that sponsored terrorism abroad, sought weapons of mass destruction (WMD), or threatened their neighbors or American interests across the globe. He said that he would confront these “evil ones” directly if necessary. From this point onward, foreign ppicy experts spoke about how taking down these three states would be one way for Bush to increase America’s sense of security after 9/11—even if all three were not linked to 9/11 itself. An answer key is provided below. 6 = first event; 1 = second event; 3 = third event; 4 = fourth event; 5 = fifth event; 7 = sixth event; 8 = seventh event; 2 = eighth event; 9 = ninth event; 10 = tenth event 1st Event 2nd Event 3rd Event 4th Event 5th Event 6th Event 7th Event 8th Event 9th Event 10th Event Date.
