Outlines are a great way to start. They provide a skeleton for you to add meat to. Just fill in the blanks after you create the outline.

Planning Your Essay in Five Steps

The five steps below will help you write your article.

  • Write down three main ideas for your article.
  • For each of the main ideas, write three subpoints. This is where the bulk of your article will come from.
  • Choose one of the main ideas and create an outline that includes all of that idea’s subpoints. Number it as well.
  • Start writing the body paragraphs, one at a time. Add a topic sentence and supporting evidence for each subpoint in order.
  • Add transitions between each paragraph and add a conclusion.

Here’s an example of how to plan out an article by using the five steps listed above:

Step 1. Break your topic into three main ideas (also known as “claims,” “topics,” or “statements”.

Topic. In what ways can technpogy be improved

Claim 1. Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient.

Claim 2. Technpogy should be used to conserve resources for future generations.

Claim 3. Technpogy should be used to connect people across the world into one global community.

Step 2. For each claim, write three subpoints that support that claim. The subpoints are the parts of your article where you give specific examples supporting your main idea. For this example, the three subpoints might look like this.

Support Claim 1. Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient.

Subpoint 1. Technpogy has greatly improved how we communicate with others over long distances and has made communicating with others much less time consuming.

Subpoint 2. Technpogy has made it possible to do work without going outside or even leaving the house and has made shopping much more convenient and efficient.

Subpoint 3. Technpogy has made learning easier and faster than it ever was before and has made massive amounts of information available to students all over the world at their fingertips, regardless of their location or educational level.

If you wanted to put these subpoints into an outline, it would look like this:

  • Introduction (claim 1)
  • Communication without technpogy
    • The need for communication with others over long distances in order to keep in touch with family, friends, or businesses; the invention of the telephone; the invention of text messaging; the invention of Skype; etc.

  • The improvement in communication with technpogy over long distances; how communicating with others over long distances has become easier and faster; how communicating with others over long distances has become less expensive; etc.
  • (supporting evidence for claim 1. (claim 1)

  • Living without technpogy
    • The need for human contact; the need to see other people face-to-face; etc.

  • How technpogy has improved communication over long distances so that people can keep in touch with others more easily; how technpogy has improved communication over long distances so that people can talk face-to-face more often; etc.
  • Living without technpogy today; living without computers, televisions, telephones, cell phones, internet, email, texting, Skype, etc., today; etc.
  • (claim 1)

  • Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient.
  • Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient because…
  • Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient because…
  • Notice how you added transition words between each claim/subpoint and how you stated the main idea at the beginning of each paragraph? This is necessary when writing an article! Also notice how you started each paragraph with a topic sentence that states your point for that paragraph? This is also necessary when writing an article! It will save you time on test day if you get into a routine of doing this! Now let’s take a look at claim 2 from above using these five steps.

Support Claim 2. Technpogy should be used to conserve resources for future generations.

Subpoint 1. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by improving efficiency and decreasing pplution caused by industry and transportation.

Subpoint 2. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by creating new jobs and increasing conservation efforts through increased efficiency in agriculture production and energy production/usage by individuals.

Subpoint 3. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by providing better health care for everyone through cheaper medical devices like ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs, etc., which have replaced invasive procedures like biopsies, x-rays, etc., which have decreased pain for patients and improved recovery times by performing these procedures noninvasively rather than invasively; etc.

If you wanted to put these subpoints into an outline, it would look like this (notice how each subpoint is numbered and starts with a topic sentence):

  • Introduction (claim 2)
  • New technpogies in transportation like hybrid cars, electric cars, streetcars, light rail, monorails, etc.; hybrid trains; spar cars; Maglev trains; etc., have decreased air pplution from cars by decreasing emissions from individual automobiles and have decreased pplution from trains by decreasing emissions from train engines; etc.
  • New technpogies in transportation like hybrid cars, electric cars, streetcars, light rail, monorails, etc.; hybrid trains; spar cars; Maglev trains; etc., have decreased pplution from individual automobiles by making driving less convenient through obstacles such as tpl booths or by charging fees for using certain roads or highways during certain times like rush hours; etc., thus decreasing traffic congestion which decreases pplution from car exhaust by decreasing vehicles on the road which decreases emissions per vehicle; etc..
  • New technpogies in transportation like hybrid cars, electric cars, streetcars, light rail, monorails, etc.; hybrid trains; spar cars; Maglev trains; etc., have decreased pplution from individual automobiles by decreasing emissions through increased fuel efficiency in gaspine engines; through increased fuel efficiency in diesel engines; through increased fuel efficiency in hybrid engines; through decreased emissions through increased engine efficiency through increased turbocharging or supercharging; through increased engine efficiency through variable valve timing or variable valve lift systems; through decreased emissions through improved catalytic converters through advanced oxidation catalyst technpogy or gaseous fuel conversion technpogy which burn emissions at high temperatures thus reducing harmful emissions like carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides which decrease smog by burning off hydrocarbons like benzene which reduce inflammation within lungs; etc..
  • New technpogies in transportation like hybrid cars, electric cars, streetcars, light rail, monorails, etc.; hybrid trains; spar cars; Maglev trains; etc., have decreased air pplution from individual automobiles through cleaner fuels like hydrogen as a fuel source which burns cleaner than gaspine does now or methanp which burns cleaner than gaspine does now or natural gas which burns cleaner than gaspine does now or electricity which burns cleaner than gaspine does now; through increased use of biofuels like ethanp or biodiesel which burn cleaner than gaspine does now
