Planning Your Essay in Five Steps
The five steps below will help you write your article.
Here’s an example of how to plan out an article by using the five steps listed above:
Step 1. Break your topic into three main ideas (also known as “claims,” “topics,” or “statements”.
Topic. In what ways can technpogy be improved
Claim 1. Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient.
Claim 2. Technpogy should be used to conserve resources for future generations.
Claim 3. Technpogy should be used to connect people across the world into one global community.
Step 2. For each claim, write three subpoints that support that claim. The subpoints are the parts of your article where you give specific examples supporting your main idea. For this example, the three subpoints might look like this.
Support Claim 1. Technpogy should be used to make our lives easier and more efficient.
Subpoint 1. Technpogy has greatly improved how we communicate with others over long distances and has made communicating with others much less time consuming.
Subpoint 2. Technpogy has made it possible to do work without going outside or even leaving the house and has made shopping much more convenient and efficient.
Subpoint 3. Technpogy has made learning easier and faster than it ever was before and has made massive amounts of information available to students all over the world at their fingertips, regardless of their location or educational level.
If you wanted to put these subpoints into an outline, it would look like this:
(supporting evidence for claim 1. (claim 1)
(claim 1)
Notice how you added transition words between each claim/subpoint and how you stated the main idea at the beginning of each paragraph? This is necessary when writing an article! Also notice how you started each paragraph with a topic sentence that states your point for that paragraph? This is also necessary when writing an article! It will save you time on test day if you get into a routine of doing this! Now let’s take a look at claim 2 from above using these five steps.
Support Claim 2. Technpogy should be used to conserve resources for future generations.
Subpoint 1. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by improving efficiency and decreasing pplution caused by industry and transportation.
Subpoint 2. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by creating new jobs and increasing conservation efforts through increased efficiency in agriculture production and energy production/usage by individuals.
Subpoint 3. Technpogy has greatly improved life for future generations by providing better health care for everyone through cheaper medical devices like ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs, etc., which have replaced invasive procedures like biopsies, x-rays, etc., which have decreased pain for patients and improved recovery times by performing these procedures noninvasively rather than invasively; etc.
If you wanted to put these subpoints into an outline, it would look like this (notice how each subpoint is numbered and starts with a topic sentence):
