I will first introduce uProc and Textline as two separate tops and then talk about how they can be integrated. Then, I will present the benefits of integrating the two together.
uProc is a programming language developed by SAP that allows users to write simple programs that automate some of the most common tasks performed daily. For example, a user can easily create a program that will update a customer or update a project. uProc has a simple structure and it is easy to learn. The syntax of the language is similar to C++. uProc programs are stored in a repository called uProc repository. It is important to note that uProc programming does not use a Personal Information Manager (PIM. data dictionary.
Textline is a top that helps users to create formatted text reports from various sources without writing any code. It helps users to create reports from a wide range of sources such as SAP, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or IBM DB2. Textline is used to create reports from SAP ERP systems, for example, it can be used to create a financial report from an SAP company module.
In this section, I will describe how uProc and Textline can be integrated together to improve security and reduce the amount of time needed to create reports from SAP systems.
In my company, we have been using uProc extensively to automate some of the most common tasks performed in SAP systems. For example, we have created a program in uProc that updates a customer in the Order Entry module when an employee in the Human Resources module changes a customer number in the Customer Master record. However, what we noticed was that it took a long time to run this program because we had to log in to two different systems to update two different records in two different tables in two different databases in two different directories in two different servers in two different networks in two different physical places. This process was very time consuming and inconvenient.
In order to improve this situation, we decided to integrate uProc and Textline together by installing Textline on the same server where uProc is installed. This way, we can run Textline reports from uProc programs easily and quickly by just changing the output destination from file to Textline. Now our users can run Textline reports from uProc programs directly from their point of access without having to login into two separate systems. In addition, the security risk of having two separate applications that runs in two separate servers with two separate users is eliminated because now both applications runs under one user with one password. Our users no longer have to remember multiple passwords for multiple applications and they can run reports from SAP business objects by simply changing one output destination. Also, it takes less time to run these reports because we eliminated the need to log into two different systems and we only have to log into one system.
There are many benefits of integrating uProc and Textline together such as:
