Twitter Inc. is based in San Francisco and has more than 25 offices around the world. Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass and launched in July of that year. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity.

Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Dorsey later remembered that it was Steve Jobs who suggested that the concept underlying Twitter was important enough to be turned into a real company. The original project name for the service was twttr, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The decision was partly due to the fact that some early Twitter uses were accidentally sending tweets with offensive content, something that could have been prevented by placing limits on how many characters could be sent via SMS. The company's founders originally considered "10958" as a short code, but later changed it to "40404" for "ease of use and memorability." Work on the project started on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message at 9:50 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). "just setting up my twttr". Dorsey has explained the origin of the "Twitter" title:...we came across the word 'twitter', and it was just perfect. The definition was'a short burst of inconsequential information,' and 'chirps from birds'. And that's exactly what the product was. Williams fired Glass, whom he called "a division president without any operational experience", and he took over as CEO.The application was originally used as an internal service for Odeo employees and other members of the Odeo community. In February 2007, Odeo announced a partnership with Twitter, under which Odeo would spin off Twitter as its own service within 90 days. However, this plan never materialized. In October 2007, both companies announced they had instead agreed to become partners of a non-dilutive nature.[20] On April 5, 2009, Twitter acquired their first employee. Kevin Thau, a developer who had worked at Odeo; he became director of development and platform engineering at Twitter.[21] On April 11, 2009, it was announced that one billion user accounts had been created on Twitter. On May 13, 2010, it was reported that Twitter would become an independent publicly traded company after its board of directors approved the move.[22] On August 18, 2013, Twitter announced it had taken down more than 125,000 accounts for promoting terrorism since the middle of the previous year.[23] According to a report by Sohaib Athar released on August 3, 2014, over 35 million Pakistanis were actively using Twitter with many using proxy servers to bypass government censorship.[24]
