Integration of Twitter and GitHub

  • Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Tweets were originally restricted to 160 characters, but on November 7, 2017, this limit was doubled for all languages except Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. Registered users can read and post tweets via the website interface, short message service (SMS), or mobile device application software. Users access Twitter through the website interface of Twitter.com, SMS or their mobile device application. Twitter Inc. is based in San Francisco and has more than 25 offices around the world. Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass and launched in July 2006. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity. In 2012, more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and has been described as "the SMS of the Internet". As of 2016, Twitter had more than 319 million monthly active users. Twitter's origins lie in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the podcasting company Odeo. Jack Dorsey, then an undergraduate student at New York University, introduced the idea of an individual using an SMS service to communicate with a small group. The original project code name for the service was twttr, an idea that Williams later ascribed to Noah Glass, inspired by Flickr and the five-character length of American SMS short codes. The decision was also partly due to the fact that some of the core developers knew C++, which Gaffney knew, whereas Dorsey did not. The development of Twttr was initiated by Glass and Dorsey, together with Odeo employees Chris Messina, Noah Glass, and Florian Weber, with Dorsey promoting the project internally. On July 22, 2006, Dorsey published the first Twitter message at 9:50 p.m. Pacific Time (PST. "just setting up my twttr". Dorsey has explained the origin of the "Twitter" title:...we came across the word 'twitter', and it was just perfect. The definition was 'a short burst of inconsequential information,' and 'chirps from birds'. And that's exactly what the product was. Williams fired Glass, who was silent about his part in Twttr, and took full responsibility for the incident. Although Williams' explanation spved many questions about Twitter's origins, it did not shed any light on why the name "Twitter" was chosen in the first place.
