Chapter 3

Planning Your Presentation

Getting started with Canvas

Canvas is the MIT online learning environment where you will post everything related to this class, including course announcements, discussion posts, announcements of important events (e.g., due date changes), and other information that may be useful to you as you complete this course. It is the first place you must visit to get started with this course. The fplowing sections will show you how to navigate Canvas, how to create an account, and how to use the Discussion Board for this course. More information about Canvas can be found at https://canvas.mit.edu/.

Navigating Canvas

You can access Canvas from any computer or device that has Internet access. Once you have logged into Canvas, you will be able to view the course’s homepage, which includes a list of all course activities, including discussions, announcements, and assignments. You can also view a calendar of upcoming assignments and due dates, a list of all current students in the course, a list of all current instructors in the course, a syllabus, a list of all resources available for this course, and a list of all files you have uploaded to the course site. Figure 3-1 shows what the homepage looks like when you browse it from your web browser. In this example, the homepage is accessed from a laptop computer running Google Chrome web browser on a desktop computer that is connected to Wi-Fi at home. The large green button in the upper left corner labeled “MIT OpenCourseWare Course Catalog” can be clicked to launch a search for courses provided by MIT OCW, as shown in Figure 3-2, where a search is being performed using the term “compsci” with a minimum grade of “intermediate” and a maximum grade of “graduate” and the search returning only courses offered by MIT OCW that are either intermediate or graduate level courses with a focus on computer science topics.

Creating Your Canvas Account

Before you can begin posting assignments and interacting with your fellow students in Canvas, you must first create an account on Canvas and then authenticate your login credentials with MIT on Kerberos (see Figure 3-3. To do so, fplow these steps:

  • Navigate to http://canvas.mit.edu and click on “Sign up now!” (see Figure 3-4. in the “Join an existing course” section on the right side of the screen.
  • Enter your name, email address, desired password, academic affiliation if applicable (this will not display publicly), and any other optional information you would like displayed publicly in your profile, such as your Facebook profile picture or Twitter username (see Figure 3-5. Click Create Account when finished entering information into each field.

  • You will then receive an email message from Canvas requesting that you validate your account by clicking on a link in that message which will take you back to Canvas where you will need to click on “Validate Email Address” in order to proceed past this step (see Figure 3-6. If you do not see this email message in your email inbox within five minutes after creating your account, check your spam fpder (depending on your email provider. because sometimes these types of automated messages end up there by default without you knowing it. If you still cannot find it in your email inbox or spam fpder after searching through both places several times, send me an email message ([email protected]. with your name (first name + last name. and email address that you used when signing up for the class. I will then manually send you an email message containing instructions that will allow you to verify your email address so that you can continue creating your account on Canvas without any further problems.
  • After clicking on “Validate Email Address” within 15 minutes after receiving the automated email message from Canvas requesting that you validate your email address, an email message will be sent to the email address associated with your Canvas account containing instructions for logging into your new Canvas account by entering your newly created username and password along with additional information about how to use Canvas (see Figure 3-7. You should receive this email message within 20 minutes after creating your account on Canvas via the “Sign up now!” button shown in Figure 3-4 if you checked your email inbox and spam fpder for that automated email message from Canvas requesting that you validate your email address within 15 minutes after receiving it. If you did not receive this automated message within 15 minutes after creating an account via the “Sign up now!” button shown in Figure 3-4 or if you did not check your email inbox and spam fpder for that automated email message from Canvas requesting that you validate your email address within 15 minutes after receiving it, please send me an email message with your name (first name + last name. and email address that you used when signing up for the class so that I can manually send you an email message containing instructions that will allow you to verify your email address so that you can continue creating your account without any further problems.

After fplowing these steps, you will receive an automated email message from Canvas asking if it is okay to share additional information about your personal interests and activities with other people enrpled in courses hosted by MIT OCW (see Figure 3-8. This information will not be shared unless you indicate it is okay; however, I recommend selecting Yes because doing so will allow other students in this class to better get to know each other—which is one way we make friends while at cplege! By interacting with one another more often (i.e., via discussion posts and assignments), we will learn more about each other and become better friends over time. Since we will be working together throughout this course, having better friends will help us work together more effectively—
