Integration of Twitch and Drift

How do you feel about the integration of Twitch and Drift? Are you for it or against it? Do you think it is beneficial to the players, the teams, or the game itself? First, let us define what Twitch and Drift are. Twitch is an online video game streaming platform that specializes in live streaming of video games. It was created in 2011 by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear, and has since grown into one of the largest live-streaming sites on the internet. In 2014, Amazon acquired Twitch for $970 million. In 2015, 100 million unique users visited Twitch. In 2017, the site reported 2.2 million broadcasters and 15 million visitors per day.[1] Drift is a mobile application that allows users to translate chat from various chat rooms in a number of games directly to a smart phone in real time. It is a free app available in both Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store. It was founded in 2012 by DriftyCo, a Seattle based company. The app currently boasts over 10 million active users.[2]

In order to understand why this merger will be beneficial to Twitch and Drift users alike, we must first discuss how the two companies came to be. In 2011, Twitch was launched by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear as a gaming-focused streaming service that allowed users to upload videos from their computers to a central website. The main focus of Twitch was live-streaming video-game content with a strong emphasis on e-sports and competitive gaming. They initially created a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their product. Their initial goal was set at $850,000, but they ended up raising over $1.5 million dplars instead.[3] The money raised from the Kickstarter campaign allowed them to develop their product further and add new features on their platform such as video chat and mobile compatibility.[4]

Drift was initially developed in 2012 by Drifty Co, a Seattle based company. It was originally designed as a translation device so that gamers could chat with other gamers in different languages and understand each other more easily without having to learn another language.[5] Drift began as an iOS app and made its way to Android in 2013.[6] Drifty Co had some success with their app on iOS and partnered up with Google Inc., which provided them start-up funding to get started.[7] In 2014, Drifty Co expanded into the market of live-streaming and began allowing users to watch live streamers through their mobile devices while chatting with friends.[8] The company later entered into partnerships with several large gaming publishers such as Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Nintendo of America.[9] Through these partnerships they were able to spread the use of Drift to millions of users and make it one of the most popular mobile chat applications of its time.

So what does this merger mean for Twitch and Drift users? Well, for starters, this merger will provide users with an even more enjoyable experience when watching or playing their favorite game. Whether they are watching game streams or playing themselves, this merger will allow them to easily communicate with all of their friends no matter where they are located. This merger also means that the two platforms will be working together to improve both platforms by adding additional features that will make them better than they were before. There will also be an improved user experience for people who like to read articles about competitive gaming or watch pro matches on their computer because now they can listen to the commentary while still chatting with friends through Drift. This merger will also allow developers to integrate Twitch Chat into their games so that players can connect with one another more easily than ever before.[10] This merger is long overdue for these two companies that have both struggled separately to gain recognition in the world of online video game streaming. It makes perfect sense that they would eventually come together under one umbrella to become stronger than they ever were apart. There is so much potential here for both companies to grow together and benefit from one another’s strengths rather than trying desperately to find their own way alone.
