As a result of many blogs being shut down on the then-dominant blogging platform MySpace, Karp decided to create a new site that would be an open forum for any types of blogs. He initially called the site “David’s Space” but eventually changed the name to Tumblr. In their first few years, Tumblr was a small company with only three employees.

As of June, 2014, Tumblr had over 300 million blogs and more than 120 billion posts. It attracts more than 170 million visitors a month who view more than 2 billion pages on the site.
Square was founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter. In 2010, Square introduced their first product, which allowed individuals to accept credit card payments using a mobile device or computer. In 2013, Square announced support for small businesses to accept credit card payments through the use of Square Register, a stand-alone point-of-sale system. The company went public at $9 in November of last year.
Tumblr and Square seem like they should not work together because they are service providers in different markets. This integration allows both companies to expand their customer base without having to invest much time or money into marketing campaigns. This saves both companies lots of money while gaining exposure for both services.
