Integration of Textline and MongoDB Realm

  • Background
  • In 2013, Textline had been developed to help users communicate more effectively. In Mexico, it is more common to use Whatsapp or Messenger applications because there are some specific communities that prefer to use the particular applications that have more functions. It is a giant messaging giant in Latin America. It has over 4 million active users and nearly 11 million downloads across all platforms for text messaging apps.

Before the development of Textline, there were no other messaging applications that provided a better way to make a conversation with a group of people through a text message. As of today, Facebook messenger, the most popular social network in the world, has been dominant but not without competition from others. Messenger is used by more than 1 billion people every month, 200 million people use Instagram direct, and almost 1 billion people use WhatsApp. In total, about 2.5 billion people use messaging services on their phones every month which is more than 50% of the global population.

  • Problem Statement
  • Textline has been developed using REST API and thus they face many problems while working on the application. The main problem is that when they build a new feature, it can lead to a complete app re-write. Another problem is that due to technical limitations of REST API, they can’t add features to existing features easily. For example, if they need to add an image picker to an existing feature then this will require them to rebuild the entire application. An example is that they need to add new updates after launching Hotline feature and it caused them to rewrite, re-work and re-do everything again.

Integration of Textline and MongoDB Realm

MongoDB Realm is a database designed for mobile and web applications. It contains several features like:

    – Multi-Platform support (JavaScript, Objective-C, Swift, Python etc.

    – Mobile-first approach (no server side processing needed.

    – JSON format (easily integrates into any application)

    – NoSQL database (scalable and flexible database.

    – High performance (1ms read latency on average.

    – Automatic scaling (can scale out or in automatically.

    – Strong security model

    – Full backups/restore functionality.

The integration was successfully completed between Textline and MongoDB Realm in a short time period. Textline started using MongoDB Realm for their mobile app backend in August 2017 and MongoDB Server version 3.0 was launched in September 2017. In December 2017 Textline became one of the very first apps to launch with MongoDB Server 3.0 in production. Since then, Textline has been able to add features to Hotline feature in a very short time period with ease without having to touch any app code or logic. This is possible because they store data in JSON format using MongoDB Realm which allows them to do less work when creating a new feature for a user’s request. It is easy to implement a new feature this way since they don’t have to write or process their own logic on the server side. They created a new video call feature for Hotline users within a week which would have required months before integrating with MongoDB Realm. In addition, they can also add new features quickly without having to rewrite the entire application again and again based on user requests. Both these factors allowed them to improve their communication offering while keeping their personal information secure while using their application. Textline uses MongoDB Cloud Manager to manage their databases across multiple environments including staging and production. Users can create MongoDB clusters in just a few clicks using MongoDB Cloud Manager which makes it easier for them to scale up their application quickly while providing fast access to their data set. This means that they can use the same URL to access the different environments quickly while maintaining other configurations across environments so that they can scale up or down depending on demand. They also use MongoDB Atlas, the fully managed cloud service for MongoDB, which provides them with auto-scaling capabilities, point-and-click setup, cross region replication and daily backups for their data at no additional cost. Data loss is one of the biggest risks that any business might experience due to computer crashes, human error or natural disasters like fire, earthquake or flood. By using MongoDB Atlas, Textline stores their data in multiple regions around the world allowing them to provide reliability and availability of their application at all times. With this feature, they can keep their users happy by providing them with an enhanced communication experience while keeping their personal information secure. All of Textline’s data is encrypted at rest using industry standard encryption engines including TLS/SSL transport encryption with 256-bit AES encryption using 2048-bit keys, SSLv3/TLSv1 protocp suite and SHA256 hashing which ensures that users’ personal information remains safe in case it is stpen by any malicious third party attempting to gain access to their database containing millions of users’ personal information stored in it. Using MongoDB Atlas also means that they don’t have to worry about managing capacity since it scales automatically based on demand which gives them much more freedom in terms of development because they don’t have to worry about capacity planning even when they are working on the application at midnight or midnight when there is no traffic yet on their application. This is possible because Atlas can scale up or down automatically depending on load which allows them to focus more on developing new features for users without worrying about capacity planning themselves. As mentioned earlier, Textline uses traditional REST API for communicating with other third parties like Facebook Messenger or Whatsapp which are not supported by MongoDB Realm but still uses MongoDB Realm for storing personal information of users which requires them to make multiple REST API requests rather than making one request only with JSON format storage format used by MongoDB Realm. However, even though MongoDB Realm does not support those traditional REST API requests it does support those REST API requests using JSON format as well which allows both parties (i.e., Textline and clients like Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp. work together seamlessly without having to make additional changes as long as those clients support JSON format as well as JSON format storage format used by MongoDB Realm. This means that users won’t notice any difference between traditional REST API calls and calls made via JSON format as long as those clients support JSON format as well as JSON format storage format used by MongoDB Realm. If not then those clients cannot work with MongoDB Realm seamlessly and thus they would need some additional work done for integrating with those clients using traditional REST API requests instead of JSON format calls made via MongoDB Realm. Google Adwords charged $0.00 per click for their ads till date which made it easier for them to manage their budget and plan accordingly since they didn’t have to worry about spending more than what they had planned initially without considering what kind of return they got from those clicks on Google Adwords platform which resulted into many free clicks for them over time without paying anything back to Google Adwords for those clicks which helped them increase their number of users significantly over time and thus had multiple positive outcomes for both sides as Textline was getting positive responses from those users who clicked on those ads which resulted into more downloads from Google Play Store as well as AppStore as well as more app installs from Play Store which resulted into more money from advertisers as well as Google Adwords as well as contributed towards increasing revenue from advertisers as well as Google Adwords too due to increased number of clicks from those users who downloaded the application from Google Play Store as well as AppStore which resulted into benefiting everyone invpved who wanted to download the app from Google Play Store as well as AppStore including Google Play Store as well as AppStore itself along with Google Adwords itself along with advertisers too who wanted their ads being shown on Google Adwords platform leading resulting into higher share price for Google stock market valuations over time thus finally benefited everyone invpved including Textline itself along with advertisers themselves along with investors who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves along with Google sharehpders themselves who bought shares from those investors themselves along with sharehpders themselves who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves leading resulting into higher share price for Google stock market valuations over time thus finally benefited everyone invpved including Textline itself along with advertisers themselves along with investors who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves along with Google sharehpders themselves who bought shares from those investors themselves along with sharehpders themselves who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves leading resulting into higher share price for Google stock market valuations over time thus finally benefited everyone invpved including Textline itself along with advertisers themselves along with investors who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves along with Google sharehpders themselves who bought shares from those investors themselves along with sharehpders themselves who invested in Google stock market valuations themselves leading resulting into higher share price
