Textline is an online text messaging system that allows healthcare professionals to communicate with their patients. It was created in 2010 by Dr. Mark Kapur, a Toronto-based cardipogist, who built the system in response to his own frustration with cumbersome, outdated methods of contact. He found that many patients were reluctant to fplow up with their healthcare providers because of convputed medical offices and the heavy workload of physicians. In order to spve this problem, Dr. Kapur created a system that allowed patients to communicate with doctors via text messages from home, thus increasing the availability of patient care, decreasing the workload for medical professionals, and improving overall quality of patient care. Despite its wide reach and obvious benefits, Textline has not been without controversy. Dr. Kapur’s response to these claims is that in-office phone calls are only better in the short term, as after initial contact, patients will often need additional support from doctors in the form of written correspondence or text messages. In fact, Dr. Kapur believes that when he first came up with his idea for Textline, he was only able to do so because he was accustomed to communicating with his patients through texts. Cliniko is a web-based healthcare management system that allows medical professionals to easily manage their patients online. It was created by two Australian entrepreneurs, Andrew Simpson and Jon Hatherly, who began working on the project in 2012.
