Integration of Sympla and Blesta

  • Thesis Statement. Integration of Sympla and Blesta would enhance the effectiveness of both platforms and improve their user experience.
  • Background. Sympla and Blesta are two separate online platforms that provide information on how to find books and textbooks at the University of Ottawa’s (U of O. libraries. Sympla is a search engine that can be accessed through the U of O’s website and Blesta is an app available for downloading to mobile devices.
  • Conclusions:

  • For students and staff, integration of Sympla and Blesta will eliminate duplication in searching for books.
  • Integration of Sympla and Blesta will have a positive impact on the user experience as it will improve the interface, remove unnecessary steps, and eliminate the need to download additional software.
  • Integration of Sympla and Blesta would eliminate duplication in searching for books.
    • Currently, both Sympla and Blesta have similar interfaces which mean that a user cannot distinguish one from the other, causing confusion when looking for a book or a textbook. If the two systems were integrated together, a user would only have to navigate one website.
    • In addition, integration of Sympla and Blesta means that students and staff would not have to go through the same process again to purchase a book from the U of O’s library or from another library. Instead, they would simply have to select a book from the list of books found by Sympla/Blesta and check-out from either system.

  • Integration of Sympla and Blesta would improve the user interface through the removal of unnecessary steps, a more streamlined process, a simplified search function, improved filtering options, and a unified search option for all libraries.
    • A streamlined process will be achieved by removing duplicate functions within both systems. Removing duplication will lead to fewer navigation options for users, making it easier to find what they are looking for.
    • Simplification of search functions will also be achieved through integration of both systems because users will only have to input one search term into one search bar instead of having to input different search terms into different search bars within Sympla and Blesta. Having one search bar will also allow users to search for books across all libraries at the U of O instead of just searching for books within specific libraries like Karsh or Généreux. Selecting how far away the closest library is will also be removed (i.e., selecting if the closest library is Karsh or Généreux.
    • Filtering options, such as limiting results based on the status of the book (i.e., out on loan or not out on loan), will be easier to use because only one set of filtering options (i.e., whether or not the book is out on loan. will be used instead of two sets (i.e., whether or not the book is out on loan AND whether or not the book is available at Karsh.
    • Finally, users will benefit from an improved search function as all books found by Sympla/Blesta will be combined into one search interface so that students and staff do not have to unnecessarily go back and forth between different search functions in order to find what they are looking for. This will reduce redundant steps taken by users since they will not have to go back and forth between different search engines looking for what they are looking for.
    • Integration of Sympla and Blesta would have a positive impact on the user experience as it would eliminate redundancy in searching for books, simplify search functions, remove unnecessary steps, filter results based on status of the book, make searching for books across all libraries at U of O easier, and improve search functions for finding books across all libraries at U of O.
