OneNote is a freemium note-taking app developed by Microsoft and available on several platforms such as Windows 10, iOS, Android and Xbox One. OneNote was first released in 2003 as a part of Microsoft Office 2003, where it was initially called "Microsoft Office OneNote". It was subsequently renamed OneNote in 2007 when it became a standalone application. On June 6, 2013, Microsoft announced that OneNote would be completely free for all users on Windows 8 devices. On October 6, 2014, Microsoft announced that OneNote would become a freemium product across all platforms and devices, with a full release on October 29, 2014. The free version is supported by adverts and users can opt to buy an Office 365 subscription to remove the ads and unlock additional storage space.
OneNote's main purpose is to digitize paper notes so that they can be accessed anywhere and anytime. To do this, users may type notes using a keyboard or microphone, or insert images using a camera or scanner connected to their computer. These notes are saved in individual electronic notebooks organized into sections. Notes can be shared with other users via OneDrive or emailed out of OneNote via Outlook, or linked directly to an email account if the user wishes not to store them in the cloud. A number of third-party applications have been developed which interact with OneNote via the OneNote API; the Wacom Bamboo Pad allows handwritten notes to be converted into text characters.
