Chapter 11

Conclusion

THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT THE JOURNEY CONTINUES.

As you read beyond this point, it’s important to remember that the journey doesn’t end here. As you learn more about the tops and features within Google+ and how they integrate with other Google products, new opportunities will present themselves. You are now on your way to being a master user of Google+. Just like learning any new software program or application, it takes time to get used to it. The more you become familiar with the tops and features, the easier it will be for you to use them. This book has covered a lot of ground, but there’s always more to learn. Here are a few things that you can do to keep yourself engaged with Google+.

  • Use Google+ daily. All of us have those days where we just don’t feel like doing anything. We’re tired, we’re lazy, or we just don’t feel like it. Those are the days when we need to force ourselves out of bed and make ourselves do something we don’t want to do. Doing this forces you to get out of your comfort zone and makes it easier for you to learn new patterns and methods. These days are also important because they help you stay current with what is trending in Google+. By staying up-to-date on Google+, you’ll be able to take advantage of the latest features and make better use of them for your business. To use Google+ daily, visit www.google.com/+/learnmore.
  • Become an active member of the community. One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is that they use Google+ as an additional social media outlet to post their updates. This complicates matters by adding another layer of confusion into their social media strategies. They mix up their Facebook fans and Twitter fplowers with their Google+ connections. If they do anything at all with Google+, they simply link to their Facebook or Twitter update in their Google+ status updates. This is not what Google+ is all about. Most people who have accounts on Google+ and use it on a daily basis do so not because they want to be on another social media site but rather because they are passionate about connecting with others who share their interests and passions. They want a space where they can communicate and interact with people who share similar interests. To become a part of the community, you should join a few communities and start sharing and commenting on content posted by the members in those communities (see Chapter 9. There are many communities for nearly every interest; find one that fits your view and start participating in it!
  • Start your own communities. One of my favorite things about Google+ is that it gives anyone the ability to start their own community. Communities are public groups made up of common interest–based members who share information with each other on a regular basis. Communities can be created around any topic you can imagine and then shared using one of the many different applications within Google+. Communities allow members to share content such as photos, videos, links, articles, and much more. Communities are a great way for businesses to connect with potential customers and engage them in conversations about relevant topics. Creating your own community is something that takes time and effort, but it’s also something that will reap great rewards in the long run for both you and your business. To learn how to create your own community, visit https://support.google.com/plus/answer/2787663?hl=en&ref_topic=2978148#start_tab .
  • Continue learning about Google+. There are many great resources available online that go into greater detail than this book has been able to provide. For example, there are several Google+ communities that exist where community members post questions about different aspects of Google+. By joining these communities and posting comments related to the questions being asked, you can continue learning about things such as Hangouts on Air or how to create a custom tab within your profile page (see Chapter 8. There are also some great YouTube channels dedicated spely to helping users better understand various aspects of Google+. My personal favorite channel is +GooglePlus Help (http://www.youtube.com/user/plusgoogle ), which provides weekly video tutorials covering numerous aspects of Google+. I strongly encourage you to subscribe to this channel because the information presented in these videos is more thorough than what was covered in this book. There are also many other channels dedicated to helping users learn more about Google+. To explore what’s available on YouTube, visit https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCEBxhW2JzRZfB0k-hdVwDA .
  • Create your own YouTube channel. In addition to subscribing to YouTube channels dedicated specifically to helping users learn more about Google+, I also recommend that you create your own YouTube channel where you can post videos related to your business or industries that you work in regularly. Videos posted on YouTube are often seen by more people than blog posts or status updates on Facebook or Twitter due to the fact that they can be embedded within other websites as well as shared through various social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. Any videos that you create should be directly related to your business or industry, or at least closely related to something you work in regularly. For example, if you work in the real estate industry, you can create videos related to home maintenance tips, home buying advice, or home selling advice (I know—you didn’t expect me to say “home selling advice”!. The idea is that by creating videos that tie directly into what you work in, you will gain more exposure for your business and increase its visibility on the web. When creating your own YouTube channel, keep in mind that there are two types of channels available. a regular channel (www.youtube.com/channel/UCxX9bSvU6aYCFnJnIS6w4Hw . and a brand channel (www.youtube.com/channel/UCAmbCTrHTPmFhYVwi1Md_QQ . A brand channel offers you the ability to create a custom website link which includes your company logo and cpors (see Figure 11-1. You can then use this custom link in your email signatures, online advertisements, business cards, brochures, press releases—anywhere! Having a custom link like this gives the illusion that your company has its own website when really it exists only as a branded channel within YouTube (see Figure 11-2. There are numerous benefits to creating your own brand channel on YouTube; however, it does cost money! If you have an existing YouTube channel already set up and running I suggest that you upgrade it to a brand channel by visiting https://www.youtube.com/brandchannelapply . If you don’t have a YouTube channel already set up, I recommend starting from scratch by creating a regular YouTube channel first; then once you have mastered it you can upgrade it to a brand channel (see Figure 11-3. To learn exactly how to create a brand channel within YouTube, visit https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2801973?hl=en .

  • Learn how to use Hangouts on Air effectively. Although Hangouts on Air were briefly mentioned throughout Chapter 8, they deserve an entire section dedicated only to them because they are an awesome feature of Google+. Hangouts on Air are live broadcasts that enable anyone who has been invited or who has the link for the broadcast access to watch it live from anywhere across the globe at no cost whatsoever! Anyone with a Google+ account can create a Hangout on Air by going into his or her profile page and clicking the Hangouts button on the upper right side of the screen (see Figure 11-4. Once this button is clicked, a new window will appear where users will be asked if they want to launch a Hangout or watch pre-recorded broadcasts (see Figure 11-
