    SharePoint provides a social networking platform which enables the user to cplect, organize and share information.

    In addition to that SharePoint also features blogs and wikis, enterprise search and web content management that allows users to create and edit documents cplaboratively.

    Twitter

    Twitter is an online social networking service. It allows users to communicate in the form of short messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as fplowers. Users can read and post tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS. or external applications.

    Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass and launched in July of that year. The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity.

  • Integration of SharePoint and Twitter:
  • Twitter posts can be integrated with SharePoint sites. This enables the users of SharePoint sites to publish their tweets either manually or automatically in the twitter account. There are many ways of integrating twitter into SharePoint sites. Some of them are listed below:

    • Using Social Connector:

    Social Connector enables the users of SharePoint sites to publish their tweets either manually or automatically in the twitter account. The steps for configuring the Twitter Connector are given below:

    • First step is to install the Social Connector from the Windows Server App store from; http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/applications/socialconnector/en-us .
    • After installing the application launch it from the Server Appstore or Server Manager and click on 'Configure'.
    • In the next window choose 'Add Account' button and enter your Twitter credentials. Once you enter your credentials fplow the instructions provided in the wizard. Once you have entered all required details click on 'Finish' button. A new screen will open showing success message once connection has been made successfully between the Twitter and SharePoint site.
    • Next step is to select 'Social Content' tab and click on add new link. Enter the title and url of your website (in this case I have used my blog url), then click on 'add new link'. Similarly add links for other services like Facebook, LinkedIn etc.. Once you have added all your links click on 'save' button to save your changes. That's it! Your twitter account is now integrated with SharePoint site. You can monitor your twitter account through your SharePoint site and if any new tweet is posted you can read it from SharePoint site itself. You can also configure your Twitter feed to one or more email addresses. Simply check 'Direct email notifications' check box and enter email addresses where you want to receive emails about your twitter account updates. Keep in mind that you need a valid email address for each address you enter here. If you don't have an email address for these addresses you won't receive any email notifications about your tweets. You also have an option to schedule or sync your tweets at a time interval of your choice for each individual feed you add to your Twitter account through Social Connector. Click on 'edit feed' button next to each feed that you want to schedule or sync at a certain interval of time. In this case I have scheduled my @VishalPatelBlog feed to be sync every 5 minutes so that my tweets will be visible on my SharePoint site every 5 minutes. You can also choose date and time when you want your feed to be synced at intervals of time. For example you can configure it so that your tweets will be synced at 12 am every day or every week etc,. Once done click on 'save changes' button and go back to Social Content tab. Click on 'view feeds', you will see all feeds that have been added by you under 'My feeds' section. Now click on 'enable twitter feed' link present under each feed that you want to enable twitter feed for (all feeds will be disabled by default. To enable twitter feed for a particular feed, check 'enable twitter feed' check box under that particular feed and click on 'save changes'. That's it! Your twitter feed has been enabled on your SharePoint site. Now whenever you post new tweet in your twitter account, it will be visible on SharePoint site immediately! If you want to pause your Twitter Feeds for some time or uninstall Social Connector from SharePoint server, just fplow the same steps mentioned above except step 1(installation. Step 1 is not applicable if you uninstall it from windows server app store (you will not see 'Configure' link in Social Connector. In that case use Server Manager instead of Server App Store to uninstall it from server. Do not forget to save changes if required before uninstalling it from servers using Server App Store from earlier steps as changes cannot be saved once you uninstall it from windows server app store (but not from Server Manager.
