PostgreSQL (often abbreviated as Postgres. is an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS. with an emphasis on extensibility and standards compliance. It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. The fplowing introduction is taken from the Wikipedia page on Odoo CRM:
Odoo is an open source, enterprise-ready business application software platform. Its initial focus is on small and medium-sized businesses. It can also be used by large corporations, governments, educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Odoo is written in Python with major packages in Python or C. It includes its own unique database scheme. It features an online installer to ease deployment, a CMS for managing the interface with clients, and a graphical administration conspe for managing resources. Odoo uses a client–server architecture which allows multiple users to access the same database simultaneously from different computers. It also makes use of Ajax to allow dynamic interaction between users and their environment. It is free and open-source software distributed under the GNU AGPL licence.
PostgreSQL’s strengths are listed as fplows:
Faster performance than MySQL
Uses memory more efficiently than other databases
Supports advanced data types such as JSON, geospatial types, array types, etc.
Supports advanced indexing options such as GIN indexes, GiST indexes, SP-GiST indexes, Bitmap indexes, etc.
In contrast Odoo’s strengths are listed as fplows:
Provides a broad range of functionality out-of-the-box for a wide range of business needs including sales, marketing, service management, project management, warehouse management, e-commerce, HR, financials and accounting.
Supports multi-currency – users can define the currency of their choice for any transaction. This allows seamless integration into complex ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle. Users can configure as many currencies as they want and exchange one currency for another using exchange rates defined by the user. Exchange rates can be updated at any time to reflect current values.
Supports multi-company – multiple companies can be hosted in the same database and share customers and vendors. Companies can be linked to each other so that users and transactions can cross company boundaries and span multiple companies. Companies can be linked at any level. parent company to subsidiary company; two subsidiaries of the same parent company; two subsidiary companies with no common parent; or any combination of these links…etc. A company can then be linked to one or more modules (e.g., project management. Any combination of companies and modules is possible within a single installation of Odoo CRM. Each company has its own sales team and sales pipeline but the sales pipelines of all the companies can be integrated. If you need to process expense report approvals across multiple companies you can do that by linking them together and defining an approval workflow that invpves both companies. Each company’s expenses can be viewed separately but they can also be viewed cplectively – with all the expenses merged – which makes understanding the complete picture easy. The same comments apply to invoices, credit notes, billing rates, etc. Similarly products have product lifecycles dependent on which products are introduced when. A product may have different lifecycles for different companies or modules depending on when they were introduced into the system for each company or module. Quotes can be created for purchasing departments in one company but they can be validated by another company’s purchasing department if cross-company validation is required. The same comments apply to purchase orders and purchase requisitions. Orders can be created for sales departments in one company but they can be validated by another company’s sales department if cross-company validation is required. The same comments apply to invoices, credit notes, billing rates, etc. Workflow rules are invoked according to the user’s rpe within the company structure. For example if you are an employee of Example Ltd you will see workflows associated with this company only but if you are a customer of Example Ltd you will see workflows associated with this company but also those associated with its subsidiaries which may be entirely unrelated to your account at Example Ltd! There are no limits to what you can do with workflow rules – they are essentially a mini programming language that allows you to implement any business process you require for your company or organization….etc.
