Paypal is a pre-dominant online wallet and money transfer service used for online shopping, bill payments and other digital transactions. It is the most widely used e-commerce payment platform in the world. However, it has struggled to expand offline, and in 2014, PayPal began to move its focus away from peer-to-peer payments to become an online-only financial services company. In 2016, PayPal became the first major financial institution to open up its near-field communication technpogy to third party developers, and partnered with Visa to bring its services to brick and mortar stores. Paypal is now the largest payment processor in the US, and the third largest online payment processor behind Stripe and WeChat Pay.
Snapchat is an image messaging app that allows users to send photos and videos to friends and family. The messages will disappear after they are viewed. Snapchat’s value proposition lies in its ability to capture fleeting moments which Snapchat calls “snaps.” The app has also gained popularity for its use of facial filters and geofilters among young people.
Paypal’s partnership with Snapchat could expose more consumers to PayPal’s products and services. It would also give PayPal access to a highly valuable demographic. In contrast, Snapchat would benefit from being able to direct users to various websites or mobile apps with just a few clicks of their phones. This feature would be especially beneficial if Snapchat were able to gain access to Paypal’s Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS. Level 1 status for HTTPS encryption, which would give it an edge over competitors like Apple Pay and Google Wallet.
The partnership between Snap and Paypal will allow both companies to combine their different strengths into a single product. Paypal is already embedded into the deepest part of consumer’s daily lives, since most individuals have at least one Paypal account as a result of several years of using it. People will likely not see this integration as new, but simply as a way to pay with Paypal wherever they shop online. For example, if a user shops at Walgreens using their Paypal account, the funds will be transferred from their bank account into their Paypal account seamlessly and invisibly. Users will then have the option of spending those funds on anything they want by either logging into Paypal on a computer or phone or by scanning a QR code with their Snapcode. The integration of these two products will also be beneficial to both companies because Snapchat will gain access to the online payments market while Paypal will gain access to a younger demographic than it currently reaches with current digital wallets.
Paypal’s partnership with Snapchat will allow both companies to access users who may not be aware that they have accounts on either platform. This cplaboration could help improve both entities’ bottom line by bringing together users from each platform who may not otherwise have been aware of one another’s existence. The partnership between these two established brands could better position them in an increasingly competitive financial technpogy market, especially as Apple prepares to launch its new Apple Pay Cash service in 2018.
