Paypal has had 5 different APIs over the years. The newest one is Paypal Adaptive Payments, but not all merchants are able to use it. Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart. has worked with PayPal in the past to make integration easier, but currently no plugins exist to integrate these two platforms. The pder APIs have been deprecated by PayPal; however, they still work until year 2020. The Paypal Adaptive Payments API does not work on WordPress at this time.
There is no official way to integrate these two platforms together at this time, so we decided to check out their developer forums to see if anyone else had managed to integrate Paypal and Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart.
We found a couple of threads on the subject here. https://developer.paypal.com/community/topics/integrating-paypal-platform-with-wordpress/#post-1 and here. https://paypal-community.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/202253808-PayPal-and-WordPress
The problem is that we can’t find any examples of how it actually works in reality. We look at the code samples that people have posted and it looks like the code is using third party libraries that do not work with WordPress, or other coding techniques that are outdated and not compatible with PHP 7. We also read some comments about the fact that the default APIs force you to use PayPal’s own services for payment gateways and shipping providers. As a result, we feel like it would be very difficult to integrate Paypal with Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart. at this time without creating our own custom API or just using a third party plugin.
Using Paypal’s Adaptive Payments API would allow users to accept payments via credit card on their site without having a merchant account or gateway on their site. However, since there is no working example of WordPress integration with Paypal’s current API yet, we cannot tell how easy or difficult it will be to actually implement this in practice. One benefit of integrating these platforms may be that it would allow users to accept payments from international customers who do not have a Paypal account but do have a credit card, which could be beneficial for sites selling products internationally. If someone sees an item they want on your site and they do not have a paypal account but they are able to use their credit card, then they may be more likely to buy the product from you than if you did not have Paypal integration. This type of scenario might especially come into play for sites that sell physical goods or services because most people tend to buy physical goods with cash rather than credit cards. We think this scenario could be beneficial for Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart. sites even though most people buy digital products with their credit cards. Another benefit might be that users would be able to send money from their paypal accounts to their friends or family members when paying for a purchase at a third party site such as a blog post or online game that accepts paypal payments. No matter what the benefits of integrating these platforms together might be, we think there is definitely room for growth in this area because both are popular e-commerce platforms used by many businesses online today.
Paypal is an easy way for users to pay for things online. By combining paypal with Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart. sites, it would make it much easier for users to accept paypal payments without having to worry about setting up an actual payment gateway or merchant account on their site. On the flip side, Paypal can sometimes charge large fees compared to using another payment gateway such as Stripe or Amazon Payments. We think there would be plenty of benefits to integrating Paypal and Shift4Shop (formerly 3dcart), but we feel like there are still too many unknowns at this time to know exactly what those benefits would be or how easy or difficult it would be to implement in practice. We feel like there could be a lot of potential growth in this area in the future if someone were to figure out a way to integrate these two popular e-commerce platforms together; however, until then, we do not think there is any real advantage to integrating them together at this point in time unless you were trying to add another payment gateway option on your site or wanted your users to be able to send money from their paypal accounts to friends or family members while buying something at a third party site that accepts paypal payments.
