Timely by Memory is a computerized calendar and journaling system designed to help people with memory problems (such as early onset dementia. keep their days organized and continue to capture those “life moments” that they want to remember.
The Timely program now contains more than 20,000 entries from its users, including photographs, audio clips, video clips, and text comments. The program has been used as a research top by scientists around the world to understand how people with early memory loss can maintain their sense of independence over time.
As memory problems progress, it becomes increasingly difficult for people to remember details about things that happened long ago. For example, someone with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease may still be able to remember the basic outline of an event, but may not be able to recall specific details. Someone with advanced Alzheimer’s disease may not even remember that an event occurred at all. However, the event may have been captured by the Timely calendar system. This prompts the question. should the person sharing the Timely calendar with other family members be able to access critical information about his or her health using this system The answer depends on the level of privacy that should be afforded this information. If no privacy guidelines are established or if they are not sufficiently enforced, the risk of family members viewing sensitive health-related information increases. To address these privacy issues, The University of Southern California Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center has cplaborated with the developers of Timely software to create a smart calendar feature called Privacy Lock. Privacy Lock is designed to prevent family members from seeing sensitive personal information entered into Timely by authorized users. This feature will be included in future versions of the software after beta testing is completed. New versions of Timely will also include data encryption features to ensure that health information cannot be read by anyone other than the authorized user. The fplowing example demonstrates how these new features work. Mr. X is diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. His mother wants to keep track of his medical appointments so she creates an account on his computer and uses Timely software to manage this task. She adds information about all of Mr. X’s medical appointments so she can remind him about them in advance and also make sure that he gets there on time. After Mr. X’s diagnosis, Mrs. X decides that she does not want his wife or children to see any information about his medical appointments; she thinks it is important for them to respect Mr. X’s privacy. To accomplish this goal, Mrs. X installs Timely software onto her son’s computer (Mr. X’s stepson), knowing that he will use it frequently enough to ensure that Mr. X does not forget any appointments; however, she does not give him permission to access any of Mr. X’s health information on Timely. In addition, Mrs. X asks Dr. Y, who diagnosed Mr. X, not to share any sensitive data with her son unless he is explicitly authorized by Mr. X himself. In essence, Mr. X has two separate accounts on Timely. one on his own computer and one on his mother’s computer. Because Timely software allows multiple users to access data from one account at the same time, Mrs. X can simply share her account with her son without putting any information at risk–she knows that nothing she enters into her account will show up in her son’s account because he does not have access to it. If Mr. X wants to grant Dr. Y permission to access some or all of his health information, he can do so from within Timely, which will grant Dr. Y access only during a specified time period (i.e., while he is treating Mr. X. In addition, Timely software offers a third option for sharing medical information between family members or friends. a private group calendar option that allows family members or friends to view calendars on a shared computer while preventing them from accessing each other’s personal information on the same machine. Using the new version of Timely software, Mrs. X can choose either option when sharing her calendar with her son. she can share her entire calendar with him without giving him access to any sensitive health-related data (Privacy Lock. or she can share only her appointments with him (private group calendar. Her ability to use these two different options gives her maximum flexibility in protecting her son’s right to privacy while still allowing him ready access to the most important family appointments and events in which he participates regularly (group calendaring.
