Integration of OpsGenie and CalendarHero

OpsGenie is a superior incident management and alerting top; we use it for all kinds of alerts, such as alerts from systems, slack, emails etc. OpsGenie is a cloud-based platform that helps you track and manage incidents and alerts. It is available as a SaaS (Software as a Service. product. We can schedule the alerts and create different groups; OpsGenie provides an API which we can use to integrate it with our applications. We will look into using integrations provided by OpsGenie instead of developing our own integrations.

CalendarHero is a free online calendar that lets you seamlessly integrate your Google Calendar with other services, such as Dropbox or Amazon S3. You can create events directly from your email as well as from your desktop app. Just as you'd expect, CalendarHero adds event details to your Google Calendar, so you can easily access them from any device.

Integration of OpsGenie and CalendarHero

In this section, we will go through how we integrated OpsGenie and CalendarHero using a sample scenario. Our team has a shared calendar called “Calendar” on which they manage their personal schedules. So, whenever somebody books a meeting room or a conference room, they book the time slot on the “Calendar” calendar. The timeslot booking information gets updated on this calendar once the room is booked. We will integrate OpsGenie with this example scenario to enhance the utility of the calendar for better scheduling.

We set up an OpsGenie account and created a new workflow template. We used the template to create an OpsGenie integration with CalendarHero so that whenever someone books one of the slots on the calendar, they will get notified via OpsGenie. To do so, we need to configure the integration in both OpsGenie and CalendarHero. Let’s see how we did this for each of the platforms. First, let’s see how to configure the integration in OpsGenie.

To configure the OpsGenie integration, just click on the Integrations tab on your OpsGenie dashboard and then click on “Add Integrations” button. Here, you will find an option for adding CalendarHero integration to your OpsGenie account; select it and click on the “Get API Key” button. Upon clicking this button, you will be asked to login to your CalendarHero account (if you are not already signed in.. Once you enter the credentials, you will be presented with an API key; copy it to your clipboard.

Next, paste the API key into the API key field on the OpsGenie configuration page; further type in your CalendarHero URL for integration; after entering the information press save button. This integration is now ready to be used; if you want to test it out, you can send an alert to it using any of the integrations on your account. If everything works fine, you will see the notification in your CalendarHero account. Make sure you have created an action rule on your CalendarHero account so that when someone books a slot on your shared calendar, they will be notified about it via OpsGenie. Now, let’s see how to configure the integration on CalendarHero. To configure this integration on your calendar, go to Settings > Advanced > Integrations & Actions > Connectors > Add New Integration > Select Google Calendar > Authorize > Now enter the API key that you got from OpsGenie into the API Key field > Save Changes > Close window > Your integration is now configured!

Benefits of Integration of OpsGenie and CalendarHero

This is an example of how integrating different services together can make them more useful for users even if they are not using these services by themselves. In this case, users can get notifications about timeslot bookings on their calendars via OpsGenie even if they are not logged into OpsGenie account at that moment. A user who wants to book a timeslot does not have to worry about remembering to log into their OpsGenie account to check whether there are any issues or alerts that need his attention; he/she could get alerts from OpsGenie but only when he/she book a timeslot from their calendar via CalendarHero. For instance, if there is a critical server down situation at the office, a user would get an alert from OpsGenie even if they are not logged into their account at that moment because he/she booked a timeslot for a meeting in that conference room which is going to take place in an hour. So, in this way, a user who booked a timeslot does not have to worry about missing critical alerts regarding his/her workstation or any other system in his/her organization when he/she is booking a timeslot from his/her calendar because he/she knows that he/she will get alerts from OpsGenie when he/she books a timeslot from his/her calendar via CalendarHero. Also, users who want to book a timeslot will get an alert from OpsGenie before booking a timeslot just in case there are any critical alerts that need their attention before booking a timeslot in order to avoid any possible conflicts between them and other users in their organization who might also want to book a timeslot in that conference room in that same hour in which they want to book a timeslot.
