Integrate OpsGenie with SMS Alert

OpsGenie, founded in 2011 by Emre Tekiroglu and Eva Shipelyan, is a pure play provider of DevOps incident management sputions. It provides two distinct services. OpsGenie and OpsGenie for SMS Alert. OpsGenie for SMS Alert is a service that sends SMS alerts to your mobile phone. It can be used with many applications such as JIRA, HipChat, New Relic, ZenDesk, Zendesk, etc. Integration between OpsGenie and SMS Alert provides a great way to get alerted when incidents occur. This integration is the base of the “Just In Time” notification process. The integration makes it possible to receive an alert by SMS when an incident occurs. The implementation is easy and can be done without modifying any of the existing code.

Integration of OpsGenie and SMS Alert

The integration of OpsGenie and SMS Alert requires a few steps. For this implementation, we will use JIRA as the application that will perform the integration, but any other application can be used as well. First of all, you will need to add the “SMS Alert” application to your JIRA instance. You can do it from the sidebar on the left side menu of JIRA.

After adding the application, you will need to configure the “SMS Alert” application. First of all, you will need to configure a new webhook for JIRA so that the integration can work correctly. After configuring the webhook, you will need to fill out some information about your application. Here are some screenshots from my application:

After you have added the application to JIRA, you will need to create an alert rule in JIRA so that it can trigger an alert after an incident occurs. This step is different depending on which version of JIRA you are using. Here are some screenshots from my JIRA instance:

After creating an alert rule, you will need to test the alert rule by creating an incident in JIRA. Once the incident is created, you will see that an alert is triggered by SMS via OpsGenie.

By default, OpsGenie does not trigger alerts for incidents that are deleted by their owners. But if your application needs to send alerts for deleted incidents as well, you can change this behavior in OpsGenie under Settings > Alerts > Send Alerts for Deleted Incidents. Just make sure that this option is checked before enabling alerts for deleted incidents in your application.
