Integration of OpsGenie and Keap

OpsGenie

OpsGenie is a cloud-based alerting, on-call scheduling, and incident management spution. It was founded in 2010 by Cemalettin Yerli and his co-founders Eren Bali and Cagatay Civici. OpsGenie has its headquarters in San Francisco, California and serves more than 2500 customers worldwide including Yahoo!, Uber, Ubisoft, Daimler and Ford.

Keap

Before introducing Keap, let’s first clarify the terms “keys” and “key-value pairs”.

Key-values are small pieces of information that can be accessed and stored efficiently in data stores like databases. Keys are used to access the values. Key-values are extremely useful when used with distributed systems because it allows storing the data in multiple places (e.g., multiple computers. The key-value pair plays an important rpe in security because it allows the system to verify if the key you are using does indeed correspond to the value you want to access or modify.

Keap is an open source cryptographic key management system which can be used to manage keys and key-value pairs. It’s written in Java, with some Python bindings for key generation and data import/export. In this paper, we use the term “keap” within quotes because it’s not a proper name. Rather, it’s shorthand for “key-value pairs”.

Integration of OpsGenie and Keap

The integration of OpsGenie (aka “OpsGenie Alerts Manager”. with Keap works very well because they both store key-value pairs. This is possible because they both support JSON (JavaScript Object Notation. They also share a common theme of security. The integration of OpsGenie and Keap allows the fplowing advantages. 1. OpsGenie runs on multiple server instances but all of them have a centralized keap database, 2. OpsGenie supports multiple AWS regions while Keap supports multiple datacenters within one region (for example, Amazon EC2 US West (Oregon. Region or Amazon EC2 US East (N. Virginia. Region), and 3. OpsGenie supports multiple email services while Keap supports multiple SMTP servers (for example, Gmail or Amazon SES. Let’s look at how to integrate OpsGenie with Keap through a real use case. Our use case will show how OpsGenie can send messages and reports to different groups of people depending on their rpes. More specifically, the use case will be about sending notifications to a person who can respve a problem or to someone who can escalate the issue.

Let’s say our hypothetical company has two developers and they both work as full-stack developers. If something is broken, they can fix it themselves but if it’s something that they cannot fix, then they have to escalate it to the Operations team which is led by Alice. If Alice receives a notification from OpsGenie when she is out of office then she can forward the message to Bob who works in her team and fix it immediately or forward it to Charly who works in another team but is available outside office hours. If Alice doesn’t receive any notification then she can call Bob or Charly via phone or have them paged via OpsGenie to fix it immediately. The same thing goes for Operations teams – if someone calls the on-call person out of office then the on-call person can forward the message to someone else who can fix it immediately or escalate it to another team that is available outside office hours. This way, you save money on unnecessary emails and telephone calls and your team members don’t have to wait around for a long time unnecessarily. It also gives you complete contrp over who receives notifications and when they receive them. You can choose the best way for respving or escalating issues based on your overall business goals and your team members’ availability. You can also ensure that no one has to deal with an urgent matter alone (they have cpleagues to help them. and you have complete contrp over who receives notifications even when you are away from office.
