Integration of OpsGenie and Bitly

OpsGenie is a powerful alert and notification management spution that offers some cop features. OpsGenie has some basic features like alerting, escalations, notifications, etc. but it also gives you the power to integrate with some other services like your support tops, email clients, etc. OpsGenie allows you to use some pre-built integrations or you can build your own.

Bitly is a URL shortening service that allows you to easily shorten long URLs and share them online. Bitly not only allows you to share the shortened URL but also tells you how many clicks that link received. You can also track your shortened links using Bitly analytics which gives you a detailed report of how many times a link was clicked and from which country.

OpsGenie allows you to integrate with various services through their pre-built integrations or through your custom integrations. OpsGenie has a nifty feature called Dashboard which allows you to add all your connected apps to one page. In this way, you can monitor all the connected apps in one place without having to go to each app’s respective app page.

In addition to that, OpsGenie also allows you to create custom integrations via the Triggers and Actions in OpsGenie. Custom integrations in OpsGenie allow you to connect to any service you want and trigger actions in OpsGenie. Let’s take a look at how you can create a custom integration in OpsGenie to connect OpsGenie with Bitly so that you can integrate your Bitly alerts into OpsGenie.

Integration of OpsGenie and Bitly

There are two ways to integrate your Bitly account with OpsGenie. One way is via Triggers and Actions in OpsGenie and the other way is by using the Bitly Connector in OpsGenie. The difference between the two methods is that when using Triggers and Actions in OpsGenie, you need to create a Trigger for every alert type and an Action for every alert action. On the other hand, if you choose to use the Bitly Connector, then you will be able to add all your existing Bitly alerts into OpsGenie in one click. So let’s see how we can integrate our Bitly account with OpsGenie both ways.

Using Triggers and Actions in OpsGenie:

Step 1. Go to Triggers and Actions in OpsGenie and select “Bitly” as an action:

Step 2. Choose the desired Bitly account and click on “Add”:

Step 3. After clicking “Add” button, we will be able to see that our Bitly account has been added to OpsGenie. Now let’s take a look at what kind of triggers are available for us in OpsGenie for Bitly integration:

There are different types of triggers available for each alert type in Bitly. We can choose any one of these triggers or customize it according to our needs. For example, let’s say we want to create a trigger for the “Engagement” alert type in Bitly. The “Engagement” alert type sends us an alert when anyone clicks on the shortened URL that was created through the Bitly service, so let’s create a trigger for this alert type. For that, we will need to click on “New” button below the “Engagement” alert type:

After clicking “New” button, we will be able to see the trigger configuration form where we will be able to customize our trigger for this alert type:

We can either use the default action in this trigger or customize it according our needs. If we want to customize this trigger, then we have three options available in this section:

  • Send Email To. Here we can specify who should receive the alert when it is triggered (For example, “[email protected]”.
  • Create Ticket In. Here we can specify which ticketing system should be used when this alert is triggered (For example, JIRA. This option might not always be available depending on which ticketing system you are using (For example, JIRA. So make sure it’s checked before choosing this option. If this option is not available for you then don’t worry because there is another option available for this field, i.e., “Empty Ticketing System” option. This option allows us to send alerts directly into OpsGenie without using any other ticketing system. This option is an excellent choice if you are already using other ticketing systems but still require alerts into OpsGenie. So if you don’t want to use any other ticketing system while still requiring alerts into OpsGenie then selecting this option would be great for you.
  • Create Alert On. Here we can specify whether we want alerts to be created when this trigger is triggered or not (For example, “On”. We can also configure the details of an alert if we need it here (For example, Title of an alert, Description of an alert, Type of an alert, Severity of an alert, Priority of an alert. Or else, we can leave everything as default value here. When we are done configuring this trigger then we need to click on “Save” button in order to save our settings for this trigger:

Now our trigger for the “Engagement” alert type is ready and we will be able to see it there in our triggers list:

As I mentioned earlier, there is another way to add our Bitly account into OpsGenie which is by using the Bitly Connector in OpsGenie. Here is how we can add our Bitly account using this method:

Step 1. Go to Integrations > Bitly in OpsGenie and click on “Connect” button:

Step 2. After clicking on “Connect” button, we will be able to see a popup asking us for our API Key and API Secret Key from Bitly:

Step 3. After entering the API credentials of our Bitly account here, we will be able to see the list of alerts from our Bitly account along with some information about them such as whether they were sent successfully or not and which users received them:

Now, all of these alerts will get added into our dashboard automatically and we will be able to monitor them from there:

So now we have seen how we can integrate our Bitly account with OpsGenie by creating a new Trigger and Action for every alert type that we want or alternatively, we can also use the Bitly Connector in OpsGenie and add all our existing alerts from our Bitly account into OpsGenie in one click! Let’s take a look at how we can do that…

The process to integrate OpsGenie and Bitly may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
