OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service, which allows users to store files on the Internet. It is part of Microsoft Office 365 and is a competitor to Dropbox. The software was first announced by Bill Gates in 2005 as “SkyDrive”, but later changed to “OneDrive”. OneDrive can be accessed through a web browser or mobile app, and provides 7GB of storage space for free.
Siteleaf is a website building platform that uses Git to back up content. Unlike other platforms such as Wordpress and Squarespace, Siteleaf does not host any files, instead storing them on the user’s own Git repository. Users are able to set up their own domain name and use a custom domain name (e.g. http://mywebsite.com. when they sign up with Siteleaf. Siteleaf offers free hosting for the first 5GB of file storage and charges $0.50 per month per user for additional storage.
When using OneDrive, users often need to edit files that are stored on the cloud. However, because it is impossible to have direct access to these files without downloading them first, users often run into problems when working with large files. For example, if there are two users on OneDrive working on one project and they both want to change the same document, they may not know who has already saved the changes and who is still working on it; this is a huge issue when fplowing the principle of “save early, save often”. In addition to this issue, due to its cloud nature, if a server malfunctions or an Internet connection breaks down, users may lose all of their work. Because Siteleaf is a Git-based platform, it stores all of its files locally, so users are able to easily access and edit them. In addition, because it is a local platform, users can continue working even if their Internet is disconnected or the server malfunctions.
By integrating OneDrive and Siteleaf, users are able to integrate their cloud-based files with their local files. This means that users no longer have to worry about losing any data from their hard drives. Users also have more flexibility because they can choose whether to keep all of their files in their internal drives or in the cloud, depending on what works better for them.
