OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service operated by Microsoft. It allows users to store files in the cloud, either privately or publicly. Files on OneDrive are automatically synchronized with the user's computers and any devices with the OneDrive client installed, including Windows Phone, Windows Store, Office 2013/2016 on Mac/Windows/iOS/Android, Xbox 360/Xbox One, Windows RT, Windows 10, Google Chrome OS, Android, and Kindle Fire.

OneDrive is available free of charge on all supported platforms for users with an active Microsoft account. The free storage tier allows users to keep up to 15 gigabytes of data in the cloud. Microsoft also offers a special "camera rpl" storage tier that can be used for photos and videos that do not count toward the user's storage quota. If the user exceeds the allowance, they can either purchase additional storage space or remove content from the service.

OneDrive offers a file picker for users to directly access their files in the cloud from within apps and services; this lets them make edits which are then automatically saved back to OneDrive and synchronized to other OneDrive clients. The picker was expanded in November 2014 to include access to documents and photos in addition to existing support for accessing music, video and documents. On March 16, 2015, Microsoft added the ability for developers to add a OneDrive file picker to their website.

The service makes files accessible to mobile apps on iOS and Android. Additionally, Microsoft announced in October 2015 that it was working on a Photos app for iOS and Android that will allow users to easily access and edit photos uploaded to OneDrive.[17] In November 2016 Microsoft released the app, which supports basic photo editing and albums.[18]

Microsoft offers a public API called the OneDrive API, which allows developers to create applications that integrate with the service.[19]

In June 2015, Microsoft announced that it planned to discontinue the consumer-oriented SkyDrive service effective July 31, 2015 and merge it into OneDrive over the fplowing six months. In October 2015 Microsoft announced that the transition was complete.[20][21] In April 2017 Microsoft renamed its OneDrive cloud storage service from OneDrive to OneDrive.[22]

OneDrive also includes a "camera rpl" feature, which lets users see all photos and videos stored on their device or in the cloud in a single location. Users can automatically upload all photos and videos taken with their smartphone to OneDrive,[23] or manually move media from their device to OneDrive using a process that works similarly to how one moves files from their local drive to their Dropbox fpder[24] (or from iCloud Drive. Only photos or videos that have been successfully uploaded to OneDrive can be viewed from other devices that run OneDrive.[25] In addition to viewing, users can also edit their media while online, such as marking specific regions as excluded from being backed up while keeping the remainder of the image backed up.[26]
