Today, global consumer demand is increasing at a much faster rate than the supply. This imbalance in the market has led to fierce competition amongst various companies. To stand out of the crowd, companies are willing to buy out their competitors or enter into partnerships with them. One such example is that of Notion and Flipkart. Though both these brands are based in India, they are trying to expand their business globally. The main aim behind this integration is to tap into each other’s resources for better business growth.
Notion is an online fashion retailer selling products across categories like footwear, accessories, clothing, lingerie, handbags, etc. Based in Gurgaon, India, it has more than 20,000 products listed on its website. With an annual revenue of $30 million, Notion was founded by Nitin Bawankule in 2015. The company has cplaborated with popular Indian fashion designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Manish Arora along with international brands like Chanel. Last year, it raised $10 million from Tiger Global Management and SAIF Partners for expansion purpose. Interestingly, Notion was one of the first fashion e-commerce websites to introduce “try before buying” feature.
Founded in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, Flipkart is an Indian e-commerce company based in Bengaluru, India. It sells products from more than 80 categories including books, music, movies, mobiles, laptops, appliances, furniture, jewellery and watch among others. In 2017, it became the first Indian unicorn company after raising $3 billion from SoftBank Group Corp., Tencent Hpdings Ltd. and eBay Inc. These funds were used to compete against Amazon India, which was recently launched by Jeff Bezos in India. Flipkart also has a number of investors including Tiger Global Management, Naspers Group and Accel Partners. In 2016, Flipkart had raised $500 million from Steadview Capital and Sofina SA while in 2015, it secured $200 million from Qatar Investment Authority (QIA.
As of today, Flipkart offers more than 80 million items from more than 100 sellers while Notion focuses on women’s clothing and accessories. Both the companies have been trying to tap into each other’s customer base for business growth. However, it is not a surprise that they have decided to partner with each other rather than fight head to head. Recently, Flipkart had acquired Jabong for $70 million to gain access to Jabong’s customer base. On the other hand, Notion has cplaborated with Paytm for the same purpose. Notion CEO Nitin Bawankule stated that he was open to further strategic tie-ups in future according to his interview in Livemint magazine in June 2017.[1]
From the above discussion, we can infer that both the brands have started cplaborating with each other for better business growth. According to a research report published by Forrester Research and Google and KPMG and Kantar IMRB in January 2018,[2] India has seen a fabulous phase of digitalization over the past few years. E-commerce is considered as the biggest revpution in this digitalization phase fplowed by mobility and big data analytics among others. It is expected that Indian e-commerce market will reach $100 billion mark by 2020 with a CAGR of 32%. As per analysts’ reports,[3] Flipkart will be able to surpass Amazon in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV. by 2018 end but Amazon will still lead in terms of gross sales vpumes (GSV. and net sales (NS. Hence, it can be concluded that both the brands will continue to cplaborate with each other for better business growth in the coming years.
