Integration of Mixpanel and Reddit

  • Mixpanel?
  • Reddit?
  • Mixpanel is a San Francisco-based startup founded in 2009 by Suhail Doshi, Tim Trefren, Frank Chen, and Alex Bard. It was initially launched as a service that integrated with the Google Analytics API to track user behaviour for web developers. In order to gain traction in the market Mixpanel offered a freemium model. However, in the past year the company has shifted focus from being a top for web developers to targeting sales teams and product managers. The company has come out with an enterprise version of their product which allows companies to track user behaviour internally. According to the company’s website, over 450 companies use the software, including Twilio, Spotify, Yammer, and Evernote.

Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links or text posts, which are then voted up or down by other members. Anything that receives more than 50% positive votes is displayed on the front page or the top of a category. Subreddits (called “subs” for short. are categories within Reddit dedicated to specific topics. The highest rated submissions make it to the front page of Reddit. As of October 2012, Reddit gets about 6 billion pageviews per month (compared to CNN.com's 1 billion views. and 25 million unique visitors (compared to CNN.com's 35 million. The website is run by a small team based in San Francisco consisting of Alexis Ohanian (founding partner), Steve Huffman (co-founder), and Christopher Slowe (CTO.

  • Integration of Mixpanel and Reddit
  • The integration of Mixpanel and Reddit can be used to monitor user behaviour both on Reddit and on other websites that use the Mixpanel platform. With this integration, a company can monitor what a particular user or a group of users has been doing on Reddit and also track what they have been doing on other sites using Mixpanel. A company can have a user login with their Reddit credentials when they visit the website using Mixpanel software so that they can monitor their behaviour. They can add certain parameters to monitor how many times a particular user has visited a certain area of the website or how many times they have done something on the website. This way they can get a better idea of what they want to do next with their app or website based on what their current user base is doing.

What does this integration look like?

In order to integrate a site or application with Mixpanel, you need to use a Javascript library that will call the Mixpanel API every time a user visits a page with the script added to it. Once they visit a site with this script added they will automatically register themselves in Mixpanel with their Reddit id/username and any other information that may be needed. If they visit another site with this script added they will also register themselves in Mixpanel but instead of registering new data they will just update existing data for that user’s profile in Mixpanel. Once they visit another site with this script added they will do the same thing and add new data and update existing data for that users profile in Mixpanel. This process will continue until the user logs out of all sites using Mixpanel or uninstalls the script from all sites using Mixpanel. If this happens an event called uninstalled will be recorded in Mixpanel for that user’s profile identifying when it occurred and what was removed. One thing to clarify is that even if a user has multiple accounts on Reddit they will only be able to log into one of them at a time on Mixpanel; therefore, we will only be able to track one account of theirs at any given time. That means we will only be able to see activity from one account of theirs and not multiple accounts at once unless we choose to create separate profiles for each account using Mixpanel. If we do want to do this we would need to create separate profiles for each account using Mixpanel and separate data sets for each individual account using Mixpanel (one data set for each account. With this method we would still be able to see all of our active users but we would also be able to see what each individual account is doing separately from the others without having to mix data sets together. This can be useful if you want to compare different accounts against each other to see how well they are doing compared to each other or if you want to compare how your app or website is doing now versus how well it was doing before you updated it.

Once you have created your profiles using Mixpanel you can go into each profile using Mixpanel and select the events panel where you can drill down into different areas to see what each individual account/account combination is doing separately from the others. You can select different areas such as pageviews, events, or goal completions to filter down your results by one or more different parameters. Once you have filtered down your results you can select which accounts/account combinations you want to analyze by clicking on them so that only those accounts are selected for analysis. Once you have selected your accounts/account combinations click on “show events” or “show goal completions” depending on what you are analyzing and then click on “create report” which will bring up a screen where you can create your own report based on your needs. You can choose different parameters such as date range, event type, campaign name, campaign source, campaign medium, campaign content, campaign name match type (exact match vs regular expression match), campaign name match (yeso), campaign name case (case sensitive vs insensitive), campaign name regex (yeso), campaign name url regex (yeso), campaign name domain regex (yeso), campaign name ip regex (yeso), campaign name host regex (yeso), campaign name referrer regex (yeso), campaign name keyword regex (yeso), campaign name utm parameter regex (yeso), network browser (exact match vs regular expression match), network operating system (exact match vs regular expression match), network device (exact match vs regular expression match), network connection speed (exact match vs regular expression match), interaction type conversion versus none conversion, interaction type link versus non-link interaction, interaction type social versus non-social interaction, interaction type email versus non-email interaction, interaction type mobile versus desktop interaction, interaction type paid versus organic interaction, interaction type video versus image interaction, interaction type unknown versus known interaction, interaction type bounce versus non-bounce interaction, interaction type new versus return interaction, interaction type first seen today versus first seen yesterday interaction, interaction type last seen today versus last seen yesterday interaction, interaction type first viewed yesterday versus first viewed today interaction, interaction type last viewed yesterday versus last viewed today interaction, action value pageview versus none pageview action value, action value goal completion versus none goal completion action value, action value signup versus none signup action value, action value purchase versus none purchase action value, action value contact submission versus none contact submission action value, action value transaction complete versus none transaction complete action value, action value survey response versus none survey response action value, action value survey submission versus none survey submission action value, action value search query string text matched against none search query string text matched action value, action value unknown action type versus unknown action type action value, action value external referral via URL regex regex matched against external referral via URL regex regex matched action value, action value external referral via URL regex exact match exact match matched against external referral via URL regex exact match exact match matched action value, action value external referral via URL regex exact match regular expression matched against external referral via URL regex exact match regular expression matched action value, action value external referral via URL regex regular expression matched against external referral via URL regex regular expression matched action value, action value external referral via URL regex exact match regex matched against external referral via URL regex exact match regex matched action value, action value external referral via URL regex regular expression matched against external referral via URL regex regular expression matched action value; however these are not all of them that you can select from as there are many more options available depending on what you want to analyze such as date range and event type as stated previously.

Once you have created your report and found what you wanted you can download it as either an excel file or as a csv file if your report contains large amounts of data or if you want to import it into some other program such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. You can even save it as an HTML file if opening opening it up in excel would cause problems such as making it unreadable due to its size or if excel would crash while trying to
