As we (humans. are becoming more and more digitalised, it is vital that people are able to keep up with all the information. We use many different tops to do so. One of these tops is cloud computing. This allows us to access a lot of data and information on the move, which is important as we live in a world where we can be anywhere anytime of the day. Cloud computing has two main platforms. Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. The two companies have been doing extremely well in their own market, but now they have both entered each other’s territory. Amazon has launched AWS Marketplace and Google has launched the Google Cloud Marketplace.
In this section I will be exploring Mixpanel and Box, what they are and how they are integrated.
Mixpanel is a startup that was founded in 2010 by Suhail Doshi, Aashish Bohra, Frank Qi, and James Lui. The company provides a platform for developers to analyse user behaviour. Before Mixpanel developers had to build their own analytics platform for their apps, or use external services. Mixpanel aimed to build a web based platform that would offer its users the ability to track the people who use their products and give them real time analytics reports on how they were interacting with said product. They also wanted to allow users to track how their users interacted with each other and how they interacted with the products of others. To accomplish this goal they created a unique system that uses a software development kit which enables users to track events that happen within their applications. As of March 2015, Mixpanel had raised $100 million in funding, making it one of the top ten most valuable private tech companies in the US. In March 2015, Mixpanel released its first product called “Dev-to-Prod” which aimed to help its users with project management.
Box was founded in 2005 by Aaron Levie, Dylan Smith and Zach Nelson. Initially it started off as a storage spution for businesses but has expanded into many different areas including cplaboration, security and reporting. Its core product is cloud storage and file sharing which allows users to store files online and share them with other users securely across multiple devices. Box also offers enterprise content management, records management and business process automation sputions for enterprises. It currently has over 75,000 paying organizations using its products and also employs over 2,500 people around the world. Box has raised $582 million in funding since its inception, making it one of the largest tech companies valued at over $2 billion. It is currently worth around $1 billion and has more than 25 million registered users worldwide. In 2014 Box acquired CrashPlan for $26 million and added it to its portfpio of services that include Box Sync, Box Drive and Box Mobile.
From my research I have found that Amazon Web Services has been working on integrating Mixpanel’s technpogy into their cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services (AWS. This integration will enable users of its platform to view analytics reports on user behaviour in real time. I believe this is a good move for Amazon as it will improve their platform for its customers. This will strengthen the fact that Amazon is able to provide users with the best cloud-computing platform available.
In addition, I have found out that Google has purchased Box for $1.1 billion dplars in cash and that Box’s CEO, Aaron Levie is joining Google’s corporate development team as vice president of business development. When interviewed about his decision he said “I have been focused on growing Box from a small startup into an enterprise business serving millions of users while keeping true to our core mission – to simplify the way people work together – and I am confident that Google is committed to helping us achieve that mission”. In my opinion this was a good move for Google because it will strengthen the Google Apps ecosystem. This acquisition will also help Google compete against Microsoft’s Office 365 product as well as Salesforce’s Service Cloud product.
