The forecasting service uses dynamic modeling techniques to predict pplution levels from local sources such as power plants and factories as well as from regional pplutants such as dust from the Sahara Desert or smoke from wildfires in western North America or Asia. The model can generate predictions up to 72 hours into the future for locations around the world – not just the United States – based on our detailed atmospheric analysis dataset. The model can incorporate user-specified emission scenarios as well as predict locally generated pplutants such as ozone or particulate matter from fires or wood-burning stoves. The model has been validated against observations from measuring stations across the United States as well as against satellite measurements from NASA’s Terra satellite instrumentation system. Its nowcasting function provides near real-time forecasts that can be readily incorporated into web applications or mobile applications that require accurate air quality information for a relatively short period into the future (e.g., a few hours.
