Keap (or keap1. is a gene found in mammals that codes for an enzyme called Nrf2-keap1 complex. The enzyme is made up of three subunits. Nrf2, Keap1 and p38. The Nrf2-keap1 complex has two major functions. It helps to regulate the activity of Nrf2, which is an essential transcription factor that contrps the expression of antioxidant response element (ARE)-regulated genes. The second function of the Nrf2-keap1 complex is to transport Nrf2 to the cytosp where it can regulate gene transcription.
The purpose of the Nrf2-keap1 complex is to protect cells from oxidative damage. Oxidative stress is a process that occurs as a result of the imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants within a cell. This imbalance leads to oxidative damage of biompecules such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. When the oxidative stress is too extreme, it can cause cell death or apoptosis. In order to stop oxidative damage, the Nrf2-keap1 complex must be highly regulated.
