Integration of Gravity Forms and Chatter

  • Gravity Forms and Chatter?
  • Gravity Forms is a free plugin created by Rocketgenius. It allows you to create contact forms, registration forms, and surveys which you can embed into any WordPress website. There are many customization options for styling and formatting your forms, and there is even a Pro version with even more features.

Chatter is a free plugin which integrates with Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. It allows you to put activity streams on your website, including posts from your blog, tweets, comments on your blog, trackbacks, etc.

  • the benefit of integrating Gravity Forms with Chatter?
  • This integration allows users to sign up for an account with your blog by creating a profile in Chatter. This profile will include information they have submitted in the form, as well as their Gravatar picture, Twitter username, what they “like” in Chatter, etc. Once they have submitted the form, they are automatically added to the activity stream on your site. If you have social media buttons or share boxes on your site, these will automatically link to their Twitter feed if they have one. The possibilities are endless!

  • Integration of Gravity Forms and Chatter
  • To integrate Gravity Forms with Chatter, you must first install both plugins on your WordPress site. For the purpose of this tutorial I am using WordPress 3.0.2 and both plugins are up to date. Next, go to Settings > Integration Settings in the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard. You should see a screen similar to the one below. Click on the “Activate” link next to “Integrate with Chatter”. This will redirect you to the Chatter Settings page where you must enter your Facebook App ID and Secret Key. You can find this information by logging into Facebook Developer Tops and clicking on the “My Apps” tab on the left side of the page. If you need help getting started with Facebook Apps I would recommend checking out this tutorial on how to create an Application using Facebook Developer Tops. After you have entered your App ID and Secret Key, click “Update Settings” at the bottom of the page. Now you are ready to add Gravity Forms to your website! To do this, click on Forms in the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard (or click here. You should see a screen like this. Click on the “Create New Form” button at the top of the page. This will bring you to a page where you can design your form. Here are some screenshots of my favorite settings for contact forms. After you have finished designing your form (or copied my settings), click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page. You should now see your form embedded in your website! Here is what mine looks like on my personal blog. When someone fills out this form, it will appear in their Chatter profile under the fplowing format. (Note that I am not actually using Facebook/Chatter integration. Now that we have our form integrated into our website we can setup Chatter integration for it. To do this, go to Settings > Integration Settings in the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard (or click here. Scrpl down to where it says “Activate” and click on it. You should now see a screen like this. This screen allows you to choose which activity streams you want associated with your form. Since we only want people who fill out this form to be added to our activity stream we only want them included in “Users who register through Gravity Forms” checkbox as shown below. Next click “Update Settings” at the bottom of the page. Now when someone fills out our form they will be added to our activity stream! Here is what mine looks like. So now we know how to integrate Gravity Forms with Chatter but we still don’t know how it works… so let’s figure that out! When someone fills out a form via Gravity Forms, it sends a request to their profile page on Chatter which has been set up as an app. It adds one line to their profile which includes their Gravatar profile picture and their email address along with a link back to our website. If we were adding users via Chatter instead of Gravity Forms, it would also add a line to their profile that includes their name and Twitter username along with a link back to our website. In both cases, the users would be automatically added to our activity stream! Here is a screenshot of a user who filled out our form being added to my activity stream via Gravity Forms. Now you know how it works! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found it helpful! If you have any questions or comments or need help implementing this integration please leave a comment below or send me an email at [email protected] . Cheers!
