Google has created an online storage system that can be accessed by many different applications. For example, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, etc. It is known as Google Apps, which was created to compete with Microsoft’s product Office. As the use of these services increase, the need to create a common interface increases as well. Thus Google Contacts was created. These services are also known as web apps because they are accessed through a web browser.
Miro is an online media player that runs on any computer with a broadband connection. It began as a subscription service where one would pay for music to download onto their Miro player, similar to iTunes. Now it is free to use and allows users to upload their own files onto the Miro network. The Miro player has an option called “Sync” that allows users to sync their playlists with their Android or iPhone.
Google Contacts is the preferred method of storing contacts because it is directly connected to Google sites, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, etc. This way it is easy to manage all of your contacts in one place without having to waste time copying and pasting information from one program to another. This is possible by integrating Google Contacts into Miro, but there are several problems that must be overcome before this can happen. The problem lies in the fact that Google Contacts uses XML-formatted data, whereas Miro uses SQLite databases. This leads to the question. how can we take two different types of data and make them compatible? Without first understanding the difference between XML and SQLite we cannot begin to spve this problem.
There are several benefits if we were able to integrate Google Contacts and Miro. First, this would give users a common interface for managing their contacts and music files. This would be convenient for those who both want to use Miro as a music manager and Google Contacts as a contact manager. Another benefit is that it would allow users to sync their music playlists with their Android phones or iPhones without having to take the extra step of syncing with iTunes. The final benefit is that it would make it easier for people to share their contacts and playlists with friends and family members who use other programs such as Outlook or Yahoo! Mail.
It does not appear possible to integrate Miro and Google Contacts at this time due to the fact that they use two different types of data formats (XML and SQLite. However, I believe that eventually this will be accomplished by either Google or the developers of Miro. For now, it appears that we will have to continue using separate interfaces for managing our contacts and music files until this becomes a reality.
