    WhatsApp is a cross-platform messaging app used by over 450 million people every month. It was launched in January 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former members of Yahoo! After Koum and Acton left Yahoo!, they started working on a new idea –‘a way to communicate with groups of people’. At its launch in 2009, WhatsApp had just one feature – the ability to exchange messages with an individual contact – but it has since added features including the ability to share photos, voice notes, videos, location information and media files, as well as creating group chats for up to 256 people. In January 2014, WhatsApp announced that it had reached 200 million users globally with 50% of those active users using the service every day.

The backup is turned on by default for new users but does not affect existing users' settings.

    WhatsApp has become especially popular among teenagers for its privacy features—it does not store user data on its servers (except for encrypted contacts), it automatically deletes messages after they are read, has optional end-to-end encryption for secrecy from third parties including law enforcement agencies if a user chooses to activate it by checking a box in Settings > Account > Security > Enable end-to-end encryption (Note that it is not possible to verify whether this option is enabled or disabled. Recently WhatsApp has added a feature that deletes the user's last seen time stamp – previously it would display how long ago a user was last seen online irrespective of when they were last active on the app, which could lead to misinterpretation regarding their online activity. However this feature is only activated when the user goes into their settings and chooses to hide their last seen time stamp; this setting is not automatic and can be changed at any time by unchecking the box again making yourself available for viewing your last seen time stamp again.

    On January 23, 2016 WhatsApp released an update allowing users to decide whether or not they want their messages to be automatically deleted after they are read by recipients (similar to Snapchat. The rationale behind this move was that it would 'help [users] get the emotional benefit [they] want' from messaging apps while reassuring them that 'nothing [they] say will end up decorating someone's wall'. However there has been much backlash from many users as there was no option to opt out of this feature unlike previous updates which have allowed users to choose whether or not they wanted a feature on offer. Many users prefer being able to choose what they want rather than having features forced upon them regardless of their preferences; this feeling is compounded by the fact that there has been no choice given for those who do not want their messages automatically deleted after being read seeing as though it is entirely possible to opt out of future automatic updates from WhatsApp in general by going into app settings and turning off automatic updates altogether should you wish not to use any new features offered by WhatsApp whatsoever or have had enough of forced features being added onto your phone being unable to opt out of certain ones without turning off automatic updates altogether if you do not want those specific features offered if you do not want them on your phone at all this means you are not able to pick and choose which ones you want if you do not want any updates at all whatsoever.
