Flipkart is a leading e-commerce marketplace in India, which was founded in 2007 by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal. In 2012 it received a funding of $1 billion from the investment firm Tiger Global Management. In 2013 it raised an additional $200 million from existing investors. As of June 2015 it had a market share of about 60% in the Indian online retail market.

In October 2015, Flipkart acquired Myntra and Jabong for $370 million and $70 million respectively. The deal gave Flipkart a combined valuation of $11 billion after the acquisition.

In August 2016, Flipkart earned $1billion in revenue, an increase of 50 percent from its previous year. It reached $1 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV. in just 9 months after launching its mobile app in September 2015.

In April 2017, Flipkart changed its business model by allowing merchants to sell directly on the platform through the "Private label" program. Flipkart launched its first private brand named Billion in July 2017. It also launched another private brand named 'Signature' in cplaboration with designer Nitin Tejwani. The brands were created in order to improve quality contrp and reduce unit costs by giving direct contrp to manufacturers.

In May 2017, Flipkart announced that it will invest between $500 million and $1 billion into digital payments in India to build a "fully-fledged ecosystem". The company's CFO Sanjay Baweja stated that Flipkart will look at building a payments bank in India that can be integrated with its app and website, and which will provide payment services to the customers of Flipkart's affiliates.

In July 2017, Flipkart launched an exclusive flagship store for Xiaomi India's Mi phones.
