The company was started by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal who had met each other in 2005. Both of them were alumni of IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad. They worked together in Dell before starting up their own venture. After receiving initial funding from Accel Partners and Tiger Global Management (Tiger Global’s stake was later diluted to 3%), Sachin Bansal quit his job to focus on building the website full time. In 2010, Flipkart raised $1 million from Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC; this was fplowed by a $20 million funding round led by Tiger Global Management in 2011. Later that year, US retail giant Walmart bought a minority stake in the company for $15 million which valued it at $150 million. In August 2012, Flipkart raised $210 million from a group of investors including Tiger Global Management, South African media firm Naspers and Russian billionaire Yuri Milner’s DST Global. In October 2014, Flipkart announced a $700 million round of funding led by Chinese Internet giant Tencent Hpdings Ltd., which valued the company at $7 billion.
