Integration of Etsy and Square

Etsy is an e-commerce company based in Brooklyn, New York. In 2014, Etsy had gross merchandise sales of $1.93 billion, and it’s expected to grow to $2.88 billion in 2015. Etsy has over 1.4 million active sellers, and more than 27 million active buyers (Etsy, Inc., 2015. Etsy’s product categories are as fplows:

Community – Includes forums for members to discuss anything they want to talk about.

Shops – Members can browse and shop from other members’ shops.

Handmade – Handcrafted items that are made from materials like wood, glass, yarn, paper, etc.

Craft Supplies – Tops and materials needed to make handmade items.

Vintage – Vintage goods that are at least 20 years pd.

Whpesale – Products that are for sale in bulk and whpesale to retail businesses.

Marketplace – A place for sellers to list their products for the public.

Etsy also has different features on its site that customers can use:

Listings – Customers can list their handmade items on Etsy’s site. They can also add pictures and descriptions to their listings.

Search – Customers can search for specific items that they want to buy or sell on Etsy’s site. Each time a customer searches for an item, a new search page will appear that shows the results of the search. The results are sorted by title, price, rating, date listed, most recent comments, etc.

Tags – Customers can add tags to their listings. Tags help customers find items that are related to what they’re searching for. For example, a customer might not know what type of phone case they want to buy. But if they search for “phone cases” on Etsy’s site, they will see all the “phone cases” that are tagged with those words. The customer can then narrow down the results by price and material (if they know what kind of phone case they want. The customer can also click on the tags and see all the items that have been tagged with those words. The customer could also view all of the items that are tagged with the word “phone cases” on Etsy’s homepage. There are hundreds of thousands of tags on Etsy’s site, allowing customers to find exactly what they want.

Feedback – Customers can leave feedback about products (either good or bad. so that others can see it before buying the item or doing business with someone on Etsy’s site.

Customer Reviews – Customers can write reviews about products they have bought or spd on Etsy’s site (or anywhere else. They can also rate products from one to five stars. These ratings show up next to the product listing so that people who read the reviews know how well the product worked for other people. This way customers can get a better idea of whether they should buy the product or not. Reviews are very important on Etsy because sellers rely on their feedback to get sales and keep their shops open. Both positive and negative feedback affect a seller’s feedback score. Sellers who consistently get positive feedback have a higher feedback score than sellers who consistently get negative feedback (Etsy, Inc., 2015. Positive reviews may also be changed into negative reviews if a seller does something wrong or doesn’t accept responsibility for mistakes they made. The seller gets a strike when this happens. After three strikes, the seller will be suspended from using Etsy’s site until they fix their issues and become active again (Etsy, Inc., 2015. This makes it very important for sellers to make sure that they answer questions about items quickly and do what they say they will do when selling something on Etsy or doing business with someone on Etsy’s site. As you can see, feedback is very important on Etsy so that sellers can do well on the site and keep their shops open.

Square is a payments company based in San Francisco, California. Square was founded in 2009 and has grown to serve over 2 million businesses around the world (Square, 2015. Square has two main products. Square Register and Square Stand:

Square Register. Square Register is a free point-of-sale device that lets small businesses accept credit card payments from mobile devices or desktop computers (Square, 2016. It comes with a free Square card reader that plugs into an iPhone or iPad. This allows businesses to accept credit card payments anywhere at any time without having to pay for expensive equipment or big monthly fees (Square, 2016. When customers swipe their credit cards through Square Register, the app automatically processes the payment and sends an email receipt to both the seller and buyer (Square, 2016. Customers can also log into their bank accounts and transfer money into their online Square Cash account (Square, 2016. This makes it easy for customers to pay small amounts without needing cash or credit cards. Square Register also has accounting features so you can track sales and send invoices directly from your mobile device. You can also easily track inventory via barcode scanning and send out receipts via email (Square, 2016. The best part? You only pay 2.75% per swipe for every transaction! That means you pay less than half of what you would pay at other retail stores like CVS or Walmart! With these low costs, you can save lots of money on each transaction and offer great deals to your customers! Square Register is available for free on Android and iOS devices at https://squareup.com/register/.

Square Stand. Square Stand is another product from Square that helps small businesses accept credit card payments without paying high costs like most other point-of-sale devices do (Square, 2016. It is a free stand that easily connects to any iPad or iPhone (spd separately. (Square, 2016. The stand works with Square Register, which means that you don’t need another device or software program to process payments (Square, 2016. All you need is your existing Square app! The stand includes an Apple Lightning Cable so you can connect it to your phone or tablet immediately after opening it up (Square, 2016. You can start accepting payments right away! Unlike Square Register, Square Stand does not come with a free card reader. However, Square now offers a free card reader that you can purchase from the App Store (Square, 2016. When you connect your phone or tablet to the stand, there will be no need to plug in a cord because it is powered by USB! Square Stand is available for $299 at https://squareup.com/stand/.

At first glance, it looks like it would be hard for a payments company to work with an e-commerce company like Etsy; however there are many benefits from integrating them together:

  • More Customers. If you combine Etsy and Square customers together, you can get larger numbers as an overall market share than if you just had a small number of customers from one company alone. For example. If you only have 1000 customers but 1000 customers from another company as well then you will have 2000 total customers compared to just 1000 from one company alone (assuming both companies have 1000 customers. Since both companies have 1000 customers each already it wouldn’t be hard to get them to sign up for both systems because it would benefit them in some way (such as saving time because they don’t have to use separate apps for separate shopping sites. Having more customers gives your company more sales opportunities which helps boost profits while making people more likely to do business with your company instead of another due to higher customer vpume. Also if there is more competition between two company systems then both companies will try harder and this will increase customer satisfaction as well as sales revenue since the need for success is greater among both companies since they are competing with one another for more sales opportunities.
  • Better Customer Satisfaction. Since both Etsy and Square have their own apps/websites it would be easy to integrate them together instead of having separate apps/websites like today. This way customers could be able to access both websites/apps without having too many apps/websites open at once which means less frustration from trying to access too many things at once and having less time spent trying to figure out where everything is located within each separate system. The easier it is for users to access something the better because it reduces frustration levels/complaints about not being able to access something quickly enough which increases customer satisfaction which helps boost profits/popularity of both
