Downtime Alert is a feature of Google Photos that automatically detects when you’re on the move. It intelligently recognizes when you’re walking, biking, or moving in a car and automatically groups photos into trips. As you take more photos, your trips will grow richer with content. For example, you can see a map view of your trip and the locations of photos taken. Also, you can easily share your trips with friends and family. Downtime Alert is available on Android and iOS. Google Photos is a photo management app developed by Google LLC. It was announced at the Google I/O 2014 conference on June 25, 2014. In January 2015, Google Photos became part of Google Drive with unlimited storage. Photos are backed up online, can be accessed from any computer and other devices, and can be organised using tags or search queries. (Wikipedia)
Downtime Alert has been around for a few years now. It came out as part of Google Maps and Google Now and has been incorporated into various products by Google such as Google Wifi and Google Duo. With Downtime Alert, users don’t have to manually tag their photos to determine when they took them. The app will automatically detect when the user is on the move so that photos taken at that time could be grouped together and easily shared later.
However, Downtime Alert also has its drawbacks. First, this feature is not consistent across all Google products. Second, this feature relies spely on GPS signals to track the movement of users. This means that movement without GPS signals will not be detected and labelled as Downtime Alert. For example, if users were taking photos while on a subway train or inside an airport, these images will not be grouped together. Third, it is not possible to share the photos in the feed of Downtime Alert since they are stored only in the cloud or on the device itself. Photos in the feed cannot be shared with people outside the user’s circle of friends due to privacy concerns.
This is where Google Photos comes in handy. Unlike Downtime Alert, Google Photos will store every photo taken by every user on a particular device. Users can organise their photos using keywords or tags to make photo searching easier. The most recent update allows users to search their photos using emoji instead of typing out keywords or tags. Users can also share their photos with anyone without having to worry about their privacy being breached due to this service being only for personal use. Google Photos also integrates with other Google services such as Google Keep and Google Docs for better organisation of data.
Downtime Alert and Google Photos are two separate products developed by different teams at Google for different purposes. However, integrating these two services would help improve both Downtime Alert and Google Photos in the fplowing ways:
