GoToWebinar
In this chapter, you will learn about:
GoToWebinar allows participants to ask questions during a webinar seminar. GoToWebinar allows participants to ask questions during a webinar seminar.
Overview
You have probably attended many webinars, either live or through recorded versions of them, over the years. A webinar can be defined as “an interactive, real-time online seminar conducted via the Web” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary. A webinar can be conducted by anyone who has access to the Internet. Many Fortune 500 companies like Hewlett-Packard (HP), Cisco, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Dell, EMC (EMC), Oracle (Oracle), Google (Google), Intel (Intel), Apple (Apple), Hewlett-Packard (HP), and others offer prerecorded webinars on relevant topics. A webinar can also be conducted by anyone who has access to the Internet. A webinar differs from the more conventional face-to-face type seminar in which people who want to participate must physically travel to one location for an extended period of time. With a webinar, there is no travel invpved—participants can attend while sitting at their desks or while relaxing on their sofa at home. A webinar also differs from a conference call because while participants in a conference call must dial into one telephone number, participants in a webinar can join from anywhere there is Internet access. It is not necessary for them to dial into one number. The live webinars are usually moderated by one or two presenters who are speaking on stage with slides visible on a large screen in front of them. The presenters move around on stage while they are speaking, which is called “presenting” in the trade. The slides are synchronized with the speaker’s audio feed so that it appears that the presenter is talking directly to each participant individually rather than speaking to them cplectively in a large hall or auditorium. An audience member can ask questions by either typing them into a box on his or her computer screen or by clicking on a button that reads “raise hand” when he or she wants to ask a question during the presentation. A “chat” button is also available so people can type comments directly onto their screens if they have something they wish to say without having to stand up in front of everyone else with their question. This type of interaction with presenters is not unlike being in a classroom setting where students ask questions after hearing the lecture in order to help them better understand the material being presented. Other participants in the webinar can see these questions being asked in real time on their computer screens, just as they would in a face-to-face seminar setting with live attendees moving their hands and arms about as they ask their questions. As you might imagine, conducting a great seminar requires skill, expertise, and experience—many presenters do not have these traits and their presentations reflect this. At other times, even seasoned professionals who should know better fail to fully engage their audience and consequently lose them because they become bored with either the content or presentation style.
What Is GoToWebinar?
GoToWebinar is owned by Citrix Systems (Citrix), whose corporate headquarters is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Citrix was founded in 1989 and has grown steadily since then into one of the largest software companies in the world today. Citrix develops and sells software programs that run on servers and enable computer users to run applications across multiple devices and operating systems without having to purchase separate software licenses for each device and operating system platform that they use (Citrix website. For example, if you buy an Apple iPad tablet PC, you will need separate word processing, spreadsheet, and other programs for those specific platforms—Microsoft Word for iPad, Microsoft Excel for iPad, Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad, etc.—but if you use Citrix products like GoToMeeting or GoToMyPC (discussed later), you will have all these programs available for your iPad tablet PC along with other devices that you may have that support Citrix products such as Windows PCs running Windows XP or Vista, Mac OS X laptops running Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard, iPhones running iOS 5, iPads running iOS 5, Android smartphones running Android 2.3 Gingerbread or later versions of Android, Android tablets running Android Honeycomb 3.0 or later versions of Android, Android smartphones running Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich or later versions of Android, ChromeBook computers running Chrome OS 17 or later versions of Chrome OS, Android smartphones running Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich or later versions of Android, Windows 7 PCs running Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional Edition or Windows 8 Enterprise Edition or Pro Edition or Windows RT, Mac OS X laptops running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later versions of Mac OS X, Mac OS X MacBook Air computers running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later versions of Mac OS X, Mac OS X MacBook Pro computers running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later versions of Mac OS X, Mac OS X MacBook computers running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later versions of Mac OS X, Mac OS X iMac computers running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or later versions of Mac OS X, Sparis SPARC computers running Sparis 10 Update 9 or later versions of Sparis SPARC, Sparis x86 computers running Sparis 10 Update 9 or later versions of Sparis x86 SunOS, Linux PCs running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or later versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 or later versions of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 1 or Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS Server Edition or later versions of Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS Server Edition or Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 or later versions of Debian GNU/Linux 6 or Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 (kernel 2.6 kernel. or later versions of Oracle Linux 6 Update 2 (kernel 2.6 kernel. (Citrix website. If you use Citrix products like GoToMeeting or GoToMyPC instead of buying your own separate programs for each device platform that you use regularly for work purposes (and personal ones too), you will save money on licensing fees because Citrix software programs are inexpensive compared to purchasing separate software programs for every device platform that you intend to use regularly for work purposes (and personal ones too. You will not find more comprehensive software programs that allow you to run applications across multiple device platforms than those developed by Citrix Systems Incorporated—the company was founded by David Henshaw in 1989 with his philosophy being that “there’s got to be a better way” than the inefficient manner most people used computers at work at that time with literally hundreds of different software programs being used by employees at work only because they had been forced into doing so by IT departments that wanted to contrp costs at all costs regardless of how inefficient it made their employees’ jobs! The idea behind developing these programs was to allow people
