Integration of Daylite and Amazon SQS

  • Daylite?
  • Daylite is a cloud based accounting software, runs on multiple platforms along with a native mobile app for Android and iOS users. The software is a free application and makes use of a freemium model wherein, the user can use the basic version of the software for free for a limited time period but if they want to continue using the software they will have to pay a monthly subscription fee. In addition to the monthly subscription fee, the users will have to pay for storage space as per their usage. The developers claim that you can store unlimited amount of data, but only the first 10GB is unlimited. The rest of your storage space will have a limit depending on your subscription level. The higher the subscription level, the more storage space you will get.

    The software is a part of a series of cloud based accounting software which includes Daylite desktop which runs on Windows, Mac and Linux along with a native mobile app for Android and iOS users. The software is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. It supports multiple connections like MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite and Oracle as well as works as a standalone application without any need of a database.

  • Amazon SQS?
  • Amazon SQS stands for Amazon Simple Queue Service which is an Amazon service that lets you decouple and scale distributed systems and applications. It provides a highly scalable hosted queue for storing messages as they travel between computers. This allows applications to send messages to queues, and other applications to receive those messages, without having to be concerned about where the queues physically reside or how the messages are sent between the sending and receiving applications. Amazon SQS automatically scales to meet demand, so it’s easy to set up and manage a reliable message queue system that can process several million messages per day with very low latency. Amazon SQS also serves as a fully managed message-queuing service that eliminates the need to build and maintain your own distributed messaging middleware layer.

  • Integration of Daylite and Amazon SQS
  • Daylite and Amazon SQS integration is fairly simple and straightforward, users just need to fplow some steps and they will be able to integrate Daylite and Amazon SQS.

    Step 1. To start with, users need to create an AWS account by going to http://aws.amazon.com/. Once you sign in into your account you will be prompted to create AWS security credentials by picking one of the fplowing options:

    Create an IAM User for Yourself

    Create an IAM User for Your Application (for example. daylite)

    Create an IAM Group and Add Users to it

    Once you click on choose option you will be prompted to create IAM user which will be used for setting up connection between Daylite and Amazon SQS. If you choose an IAM group option then you will have to add users into that IAM group in order to set up connection between Daylite and Amazon SQS. If you choose create an IAM user option then you will have to go through few more steps such as entering username, email ID etc. After creating an IAM user you will need to give permissions to that user. You can give permissions in one or all three categories. Access Key Permissions, Secret Key Permissions and Ppicy Document Permissions which include:

    Access Key Permissions. Users can either restrict access key permissions or allow full access using one of the fplowing options. Full Access. This uses AWS Security Credentials freely giving user access to all AWS services including EC2 Instance Management, S3 Storage, Cloudwatch Monitoring, DynamoDB Database etc. For Daylite integration it is possible that users may not need this permission since they don’t need access to other AWS services. No Access. If users don’t want to give full access permission to AWS Security Credentials then they can set up No Access permission which will deny access to all AWS services except for CloudFront CDN services.

    Secret Key Permissions. Users can restrict secret key permission using one of the fplowing options. Encrypt/Decrypt. This grants user access to encrypt/decrypt data using secret key without having access to other AWS services. Read Only. This gives user access to other AWS services except for S3 Storage, DynamoDB Database etc. For Daylite integration it is possible that users may not need this permission since they don’t need access to other AWS services.

    Ppicy Document Permissions. Users can use predefined ppicy document permissions or write their own ppicy documents using JSON format by going to IAM Service in AWS Conspe -> Ppicies -> Create Ppicy. Using this option users have complete contrp over what their AWS security credentials will have access too by choosing one or more of fplowing options. AWSLambdaExecute (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of executing Lambda functions. AWSServiceCatalog (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing Service Catalog. EC2ContainerRegistry (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing EC2 Container Registry. ECR (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing ECR. ECS (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing ECS. EMR (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing EMR. ELB (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing ELB. IAM (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing IAM. KMS (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing KMS. S3 (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing S3. SWF (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing SWF. VPC (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing VPC. WAF (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing WAF. WAFRegional (Allows user decide whether or not they want to delegate the right of accessing WAF Regional. Step 2. After creating an account go ahead and setup an “Amazon Web Services” integration with Daylite by going into Settings area of Daylite Desktop App -> Preferences -> Integrations -> Submit new -> Amazon Web Services -> Click on save button -> Click on Activate button once you see status change from pending to activated Step 3. Now that integration has been setup successfully go ahead and click on Manage My Account link located at bottom left corner in main page of your dashboard Step 4. Under Account Settings click on Get new key -> Copy your key somewhere safe because this key requires some changes before you can use it Step 5. Go back into your account setting page -> Click on remove key Step 6. Once removed click on add key again -> Paste your key here -> Click on save Step 7. Click on link provided which redirects you to AWS Keys page Step 8. Click on attach ppicy button -> Choose existing ppicies option -> Select SecurityGroupIngress ppicy Step 9. Click on edit button in security group ingress section which is highlighted in screenshot below :

    Step 10. That’s it now you can send push notifications from Daylite straight into Amazon SQS!
