Integration of Chatter and Twitter

The integration of Chatter and Twitter is one of the most significant changes in college libraries. In this article, I will discuss the advantage of the integration of Chatter and Twitter in a library.Brief Introduction and BackgroundChatter is a web-based application that allows patrons to research online and request materials from the library directly from their computer or mobile device. It has become an integral part of the library’s operation. With its help, library users can search, reserve, renew and check out library materials that are housed in different branches. They can also renew items, place holds on materials and edit their accounts. In addition, they can access RSS feeds to get notifications about new books published or conference announcements. A Chatter user can log into the library website using his or her user name and password. On the other hand, Twitter is a microblogging service that enables people to post messages of up to 140 characters in length (known as tweets. which are available for others to read. Tweets are publicly displayed on users’ profile pages and may be read by anyone who has an Internet connection. Twitter was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. It was launched in July 2006 and currently has over 200 million active users worldwide. It is important to know how these two technologies are used together. A librarian uses Twitter to announce new books in the library and posts conference updates. For example, when a new book is published, a librarian can send a message through Twitter to inform users of the availability of the book through the library. This will prompt the users to go to the library website to order or reserve the book they need. This way, users will no longer have to stop by the library to check what titles are available for them to borrow. By integrating Chatter with Twitter, library users can avail of resources without leaving their homes. In addition, Chatter and Twitter integration can help you save time and effort. You will not need to visit the library if you want to check if there are new books that are available for you to borrow. The integration of Chatter and Twitter enables users to access even the pieces of information that are only available inside the library without having to physically enter it.In libraries around the world, librarians are integrating Chatter with Twitter in order to expand their services for their patrons and make it easier for them to conduct their research. However, some questions still remain unanswered like. Is it worth the investment? How do we measure our success? These are issues that we have yet to address. There is still no clear guideline on how best to integrate Chatter with Twitter in libraries.Recently, there has been a shift from print to electronic sources in academic libraries which led to a lot of discussion among librarians regarding the integration of Chatter and Twitter. Some librarians believe that integrating Chatter with Twitter may not be advantageous since they use different platforms and do not share similar features. However, despite these concerns, many libraries around the world have already integrated these two technologies together as they believe that they can provide better services for their patrons using both of them.A good example is the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL. LAPL has been integrating Chatter with Twitter since July 2012 after receiving a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS. LAPL is currently running a pilot project where they are testing different ways of integrating Chatter with Twitter. In order to promote interaction between users and the library staff, LAPL offers classes about how to use these two technologies in conjunction with each other. Users are also encouraged to give feedback about their experience with this integration so that LAPL can improve it accordingly. With the integration of Chatter with Twitter, libraries can better serve their users by providing them with better services. With this technology, users can now access online catalogues without having to leave home and order materials which would have otherwise been available only at the library’s shelves.Works CitedFriedman, D.
