The link can be sent via email or text message or any other means of communication. After receiving the link, the recipient will be able to view and edit the shared spreadsheet. Although sharing files can be done with an app, a more convenient way would be through a web browser. A web browser has a wider reach compared to an app, so anyone who wishes to access the file doesn't have to download an app. However, if one wants to share a file among multiple people without having to use email or text messages, they will have to use an app. For example, if a teacher wants to distribute a quiz among her students without being interrupted by questions from other students about the quiz, she would have to use an app just for that particular quiz instead of having all her students download the app for all her quizzes. If she uses an app just for one quiz, then each student can view and edit his/her own copy of the quiz without worrying about accidentally editing someone else's copy of the quiz.
