In the beginning there was a man...The man's name was Robert, and he was a programmer. Robert was a good programmer. But he wasn't an exceptional programmer. He wasn't a famous programmer. He wasn't even an up-and-coming programmer. Robert's primary occupation was writing computer code. And Robert was really good at that. But Robert was more than a programmer. He had big ideas. He wanted to create the next big thing in the e-commerce marketplace. He wanted to make an impact on the world. And he knew that the best way to make an impact was to create something truly innovative. Something new and different and exciting. Something nobody had ever seen before. And so Robert set out on his quest to create 'the next big thing'. He started with a blank computer screen, a keyboard, and a mouse. And from those humble beginnings, he created the most revolutionary product since the invention of the internet—he created BigCommerce. But Robert wasn't just creating BigCommerce for himself. He knew that if he could get other people excited about his creation, if he could get them to share his vision, then BigCommerce would be something truly great. And so he took his brilliant idea—his passion project—to the masses, and ultimately to eBay, who would eventually buy his company and turn his vision into a reality.
BigCommerce is an e-commerce platform that allows users to create a customizable online store without any prior technical knowledge or experience. The company's mission is to help merchants sell more by giving them access to useful tools and resources that are usually only available to large corporations. This is achieved through an easy-to-use interface that does not require any coding or programming in order to set up an online store.BigCommerce isn't just a website builder. It's a full-service e-commerce solution built specifically for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs. In addition to its website building software, BigCommerce provides access to several other online tools including email marketing, social media management, SEO optimization, content marketing, mobile commerce, web analytics, and inventory management. These online tools allow business owners to easily manage their entire e-commerce operation in one single place.BigCommerce also offers customers access to an extensive marketplace of 3rd party developers who can help businesses create websites on any platform or in any style possible—including custom designs, mobile optimization, and eCommerce sites with unique features such as live chat, virtual reality integration, and Google Shopping feeds.BigCommerce has existed for over 7 years now, but the company didn't always have such a large presence in the e-commerce scene. At first, BigCommerce was nothing more than an exciting project that Robert created as a side project while working as a programmer for eBay. As it turns out, Robert wasn't just good at coding—he was good at selling too. He soon realized that his side project had potential and decided to quit his day job to pursue his dream full time. After spending almost two years learning from his mistakes and making adjustments along the way, he officially launched BigCommerce in 2010.Since then, BigCommerce has grown exponentially and become one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the world. The company has experienced year over year growth in revenue for each quarter since its launch and has recently been recognized by Forbes as one of America's Most Promising Companies and by Deloitte as one of the fastest growing companies in North America. In 2016 alone the company generated over $100 million in revenue and was named as one of the top 100 fastest growing technology companies in North America by Deloitte for a second consecutive year.BigCommerce is already home to over 110,000 online stores in 190 countries around the world, representing over 500,000 products sold per day. And while BigCommerce's success is certainly impressive, even more notable is the fact that they were acquired by eBay back in 2011 when their traffic was less than 5% of what it is today. In addition to being acquired by eBay back in 2011 for $310 million dollars, BigCommerce has also received several industry awards including Best E-commerce Platform by Internet Retailer Magazine and Best Website Builder for Small Online Businesses by PC Mag Reader Choice Awards .
Ultimately I am not sure what happened between Robert and eBay (I assume at some point Robert wanted to be able to make decisions independently again), but we can still learn a lot from their relationship. We can take away two important lessons from this story:
1.. Successful companies should never limit themselves to one marketplace.2.. It's important to think outside of the box (or in this case inside the box. .Be sure to comment below with your thoughts on this story and let me know if you have any questions about BigCommerce or eBay!
