Integration of Basecamp Classic and ShipStation can be achieved in multiple ways including active syncing, API integration or copy/paste integration. In this paper, I will provide an overview of the integration between Basecamp Classic and ShipStation through active syncing.Active sync refers to real time data transfer between two sources. Â This process uses a protocol called "WebDAV", which is basically a set of extensions to HTTP that allows users to perform remote actions on resources; it is an extension of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP. Â The WebDAV protocol also makes use of XML to describe the resources being managed by the protocol.Basecamp Classic uses WebDAV protocol to synchronize its data with ShipStation. A script is used to create a special folder on the server that records all of the information in the Basecamp Classic database and then transfers it to ShipStation. Â By default, this script runs daily at midnight every day. Â The synchronization process works in both directions; if any changes are made to the data in either Basecamp Classic or ShipStation, that change will be reflected in both systems as soon as the script has run again. Â Changes could include new or edited documents or tasks completed in one system but not the other.ShipStation supports various sync methods for Basecamp Classic including FTP, SFTP, Amazon S3 and Rackspace Cloudfiles Sync. Â FTP and SFTP require no installation or configuration on the client side but have the downside of requiring public key authentication for security. Â Amazon S3 and Rackspace Cloudfiles Sync support secure access with access keys but require client-side installation and configuration. Â Amazon S3 requires that the user own an Amazon Web Services account while Rackspace Cloudfiles Sync requires an API key from Rackspace.
An example of the benefits of integrating Basecamp Classic and ShipStation could be seen from a manufacturer's point of view who wants to automate its operations using its website, e-commerce platform and a third-party logistics (3PL. provider. Â Basecamp Classic can be used to manage the manufacturing operations such as production planning, inventory management and shipping fulfillment while ShipStation can be used to manage customer orders and shipping details. Â Using these applications together would allow the 3PL provider to automatically receive orders from Shopify/Etsy/Amazon and automatically fulfill those orders using its warehouse facilities without human intervention.Another benefit of this integration could be that ShipStation could be a completely automated solution for managing orders without the need for human intervention from the manufacturer. Â Using Shipstation's "Smart Labels", orders can be directly shipped from warehouses using labels generated by Shopify/Etsy/Amazon without any custom programming or coding required on behalf of the manufacturer. Â An example of this smart label functionality could be seen from an automobile manufacturer who might integrate its Shopify store to offer monthly lease plans for vehicles on their site; when a customer makes a purchase on the website, the vehicle could be directly shipped from one of its warehouses rather than having to first ship it to a dealership before it can be delivered to the customer's doorstep. Â This automation eliminates any chances of human error during shipping processes resulting in cleaner shipping processes and potentially happier customers.
